I Can Barely See Outdoors, Cataracts

That is when I am outdoors. I asked the retinal specialist. He explained that it was the new lens put in place of the cataract-clouded lens. Without a cloudy lens, I naturally receive more light. When I am in the car on a barely sunny day, my eyes hurt. When the sun is bright, my eyes are in such pain that is unbearable. I actually have to close my eyes!

I believe it has been five years since I had my cataracts removed. From what I have read at first too much light is a problem to which people slowly adjust. This problem has only been evident for the last 6-12 months.  Supposedly, this too much light problem is only in those new cataract surgery patients.

I will have to purchase prescription sunglasses. Oh, I furrow my brown very often now when outdoors, so I need to quit that.

Now, the reason I even mention this is I wonder if anyone else is having a problem with eyes sensitive to light years after cataract surgery. ??? Have you had cataracts removed?

  1. I had my cataracts removed several years ago and had no bright light problems. I do wear sunglasses tho as I always have. Mine are sunglasses I can just put over my regular glasses so don't have the expense and bother of an extra pair of glasses. I did have transition lenses once but didn't like them much

    1. Ann,
Thanks. I had no trouble at first, just now. I read nothing on the internet about later light problems, but the retina specialist told me the extreme light sensitivity was because of the lens. I cannot stand the glasses that go over glasses, at least, not the ones I have used. And, they fall off. Maybe I need a different kind.

    1. Michelle,
As soon as I get mine, I will wear them outdoors. UV rays are not good for eyes. Thanks.

  3. I haven't had cataracts, but it seems my eyes are very sensitive to sunlight. I have heard that lighter colored eyes can be more sensitive to light in general, not just sunlight.

I rarely EVER go out without sunglasses. If I'm wearing my contact I use regular sunglasses, if I'm wearing my glasses, I have a pair of sunshades that fit right on top. I also have a pair of prescription sunglasses that are a few years old and need replacing as they're very scratched.

    1. Alice,
Thanks. My eyes are very dark, sooo... I will wear sunglasses to look out the window when I get them...lol. I could never find the clipons and sunglasses over my glasses are not a good fit and hurt and slide off. Right now, it is hard to go in and look at frames since people are still limited.
