Frog-Strangler

Sunday afternoon, I mentioned to Tommy that maybe we could go for a ride. He said okay and we both dawdled, thankfully. Soon, the rains came, a real frog-strangler. I would hate to have been on the road or trying to get back into the house during that rain.

The flowers did not have to be watered. The day cooled off and it was an amazing 69F degrees toward evening. Everything looks so fresh after a rain.

I discovered an amazing thing on my blog. I accidentally clicked on something and found a cache of comments that never showed up in the comments. Many of them belonged to Kim. If I did not comment or answer your comment, they may be up in the comments part of each post. I have never seen that spot before and cannot find it now.

Last evening, Tommy did something and knocked a box off another box. I ran to see what happened because of the horrific sound. The box he knocked off had this stuff from a junk drawer in the kitchen. I had told him to sort out what he did and did not want from two weeks ago emptying the drawer. In the meantime, I had just put down a quart of dried lima beans into the box.

Well, the whole top of the jar broke off, one of the new jars. He was going to go through the box but I insisted I do so. He is not afraid of glass and would have cut himself or strewn it all over. He kept grabbing tools like I would throw them out. One tool he told me to throw away was very rusty needle-nose pliers, so I said I wanted them. Then, he said no, he would keep the tool. arrrggh!

He wanted to toss the box with no top into the garbage can. We would have had glass all over the street and the machine that picks up the cans does not contain loose items. I watch things falling and floating away in the wind. He does not believe it. I finally convinced him to put the box into a bag and tie it up. Neither of us needs glass in a foot.

Now, the broken top to the glass jar is still lying upside down on the carpet. We never walk there and I put something in front of it so we won't. Sunday, I was going to carefully pick up shards I can see. Then, I was going to use packing tape to pick up the tiny pieces as small as glitter. THEN, I was going to have him vacuum it with his new stick vacuum. So, that may or may not get done before bedtime.

He now has a Publix bag for his tools. We both need tool boxes.  The hammer in the box probably hit the canning jar as the box fell and broke it. I will save the lid from the broken top of the jar without slicing my hand open.

Saturday and Sunday were low-key days, nothing much done, nothing new cooked. We both went to the kitchen and chose what we wanted for all three meals. I eat the chicken breast and he wants the beef or pork.

If you have your druthers, which meat would you prefer?

  1. I have never heard that saying before - frog-strangler - I've learned something new today :)

  2. I would probably pick the beef, I eat a lot of chicken and pork, beef is only about once a week.

I have also never heard a frog strangler, when I was a kid and we had a good rain all the frogs would come out to splash and play.

I don't know if it works but I have read that if you take a piece of bread and squish it on the area there might be glass it will help get up those tiny pieces. I would take that vacuum and go over it very well, like 5 or 10 minutes to make sure you get all the tiny pieces up. With Tommy's diabetes just a little cut in his feet could get serious really fast.

It would probably be very good if you both wore slippers in the house. Not only in case your step on something but also to prevent slips and falls. I mean the kind of slippers that have rubber soled bottoms and full heels, not slide ins, those are a whole other thing that can cause a fall.

    1. I mostly eat chicken due to allergy to mammal products. But, I do love chicken breasts.

The frogs must play until they drown in the kind of rain we had on Sunday.

The bread is a good idea. I just wish the jar had not broken on the carpet. Oh, I will vacuum for a while, not just once over and back. Tommy may have to do most of it since I cannot push even the stick. I have diabetes, too, so I worry for myself also.

I always wear sandals in the house but he goes barefoot. He bought a pair of Croc knockoffs to wear going to dr. He said he won't wear the strap behind his heel. He wears a pair of shoes in stores and to pump gas and in the yard that have two large holes. His feet touch the ground. ewww He just refuses to spend the cost of good shoes and says it is none of my business what kind of shoes he wears.

  3. I have heard of frog strangler rains before. That's a lot of rain.

Sorry to hear about the broken glass on your carpet. Shining the flashlight on the area will show a lot of the small bits of glass, and vacuuming it will hopefully get rid of all of it. I'd go back and do it again another day just to make sure.

I would like beef, if it isn't tough; pork next; and chicken last. We already eat quite a bit of chicken. mostly because it can be cooked quick and easy and is usually less expensive. We also have ground beef that I can cook in the skillet this time of year.

Have a nice day. Take care with that glass.

    1. susie,
I am trying to think of every means of seeing and getting all of it up from off and in the carpet.

I definitely have my preferences in cut. Tender is the main thing. That is all true of chicken. But, of course, I just like chicken breasts the best.

      I will be very careful.

  4. I get hungry quicker after chicken, though we have chicken wings every Tuesday night. I much prefer beef. More nutrients and keeps me feeling full longer. I can eat pork, but still prefer beef.

    1. Alice,
I will have to see if I get hungrier after chicken. I will have to watch and see if I get hungrier after chicken. I wonder if it could be what you eat with chicken or beef.

    2. I only eat meat. There's nothing 'with' it.

    3. Alice,
You mean you just have a slab of meat without any vegetables, bread, or dressing or anything?

    4. That's it. My husband and I started keto four years ago for weight loss (me) and to reverse his diabetes. Keto is grain free, sugar free. No industrial seed oils (canola, vegetable) because they are inflammatory. No bread or pasta (grains). Within three months he was off all diabetes medications.

The last two years I have been mostly carnivore. Just meat. Plants and starches can be inflammatory and drive cravings. Meat (and especially red meat) has everything a human needs. The fat that comes along with it is better for the body than processed oils. Meat and fat help you feel full longer, so require less food to feel satiated and satisfied.

    5. Alice,
This is all very interesting. You don't eat any fruits or vegetables? No fiber?

    6. I do not eat fruits or vegetables. I may rarely have a strawberry, or add an onion to something for flavor.

Contrary to popular belief, fiber is not necessary. There are many people who have cured common diseases with the exclusion of plants.

And fiber supplements to help constipation are like adding more cars to a traffic jam and hoping that resolves the problem. :)

  5. Never heard of a heavy rain described as a frog-strangler. All I can see is a hand squeezing a frog. We always used the term "gully-washer". I don't know if that makes much more sense, to be honest.

I prefer chicken or fish. Sometimes I like a nice hamburger. Other than grilled brat patties and deli ham, I am not really a fan of pork anymore. I could give it and beef up entirely. I would probably be okay being an ovo-lacto-pescetarian.

Although last night I did whomp up a batch of chili-cornbread skillet, and it was sooooo good! I make mine with the cornbread on the bottom, in a hot cast-iron skillet that's been greased with bacon fat. That cornbread gets so crispy around the edges you could just weep in gratitude.

    1. Sue,
I think a gully washer is worse than a frog strangler. That is so funny about the hand squeezing a frog!

Crispy cornbread is the best. When I first met Tommy and realized how much he loved cornbread, I kept him really happy. When I learned he was diabetic, I would give him one piece, and freeze the rest in slices wrapped in waxed paper and put into a gallon storage bag. He could take that home, but I would not make it for him every week after that. The crispy edge is my favorite part of the cornbread. Now, I want to make cornbread!

I liked to make the cornbread mixture bubble and sizzle in the bacon fat.
What do you do with the chili? What is chili-cornbread skillet?

    2. Linda, I sent you the recipe via email. It's just browned ground meat and cheese layered atop a skillet-baked cornbread. No beans.

  6. PS if the bottoms of Tommy's shoes are leather they can go to a cobbler who will put on a whole new soles. That is, if that cranky old man can part with his precious, run-down, shoddy shoes for a few days.

"None of your business", indeed! He must have been quite the precious child. ;^) Tommy, life is too dang short to be so dang cranky! Lighten up, old man! LOL! ;^) ;^)

  8. We were on the crest at our favorite overlook and could see the storms in your area. They looked brutal. Meanwhile on our side of the hill we got about 30 seconds of rain. Now I have to go water some of the plants.

    1. They looked bad from here, too. There was little lightning compared to the storms a few weeks ago, thankfully. Tommy always rejoices when it rains enough he does not have to water flowers.

  9. Ha, had to look up "druthers"! Never heard that before so you've added a word to my vocabulary!

  10. I have never heard "frog strangler either" LOL. but I sure wouldn't mind a good rain to give me a break from watering :)

    1. One,
We had another rain today, so many days of rain in the afternoon do make watering unnecessary. The term is Southern.
