Busy Day

Things planned today happened with only one snafu. The weather was beautiful--80F, calm, pretty skies. The whole day would have been better if I had started earlier. 

First stop was the courthouse to turn in request for an absentee ballot. Tommy had to go down a steep ramp and then up, something I cannot do. I cannot do steep, up or down. So. they refused to give him a ballot for me. I have to go in by myself. Even in a wheelchair, that ramp is too steep. So, now I fight for my right to vote. 

We took the shoes I ordered to SAS. I just got another pair of sandals, a very bright pink. Shoes for my swollen feet will be bought somewhere else. I love pink, but if these are too bright, I still need something to wear at home.

Then, I went to King Cotton, a store that sells only upholstery and drapery fabric. They helped me with a place to sit. They brought five samples--I immediately said Tommy would like the huge buffalo check. But, I wanted him to have a choice, so we took the three best choices to Tommy. He took like three seconds to say he wanted the buffalo check. It is blue and a tan/gray color, not really greige. 

I ordered it with his cc and left--2 yards at $37/yd. So far, that is the only expense so since we got these from the trash in front of a house being renovated to rent. I expect to spend money on foam to go underneath and a layer of polyester over the foam. This is still cheaper than buying new chairs. And, these are old and sturdy and wood ladderbacks. Someday, I will find a free table to replace the smoky glass table of his that I just hate. Of course, he will have to agree. 

Lastly, we stopped at The Pig to get milk for Tommy and to get Lynda some guaifenesin for her congestion. This for lung congestion. She really needs it. I found a really fresh bag of cole slaw mix for $/97. We will have that for dinner.

At Lynda's house, she gave us her pumpkin and a bag of fresh green beans. Tommy has added it to our two pumpkins and butternut squash on the porch. I may cook the green beans to go with the coleslaw I will have with the ground beef from the freezer. 

So, we are home and watching a wonderful woodpecker documentary. Amazingly, all our plans have gone well, except for me not being able to vote! 

The week ahead looks good with highs near 80 and little rain except for the weekend. This makes me very happy! We may break record highs. I won't complain about that. 

Once again, I am looking for someone to help here. I have a call in to a friend. I gave Lynda the number for the missionaries to help her with a few things at her house. 

We have a hard day tomorrow, and I have phone calls to make tomorrow, also. 

I love to pick out fabric, especially upholstery fabric! Do you? Maybe this will expand in this house, to maybe some painting. Or something! I need to get some of my lamps rewired. What projects do you need to do or wish you could do to improve your home? We can all fantasize. 

New Shoes, Concussion, and TMI

My friend is nauseous and dizzy after her being shoved down by the child and realizes these are signs of concussion. She cannot afford the ER. And, she still won't let the daycare take care of it because she does not want to start trouble. !!! I have called her multiple times to check in. And, so has another friend who finally realized something was wrong because her car was home. We don't want her dog to eat her. 

Tommy and I finally had our appointments with the podiatrist. I was really frightened and told her why, saying, "I suppose you are going to touch my feet?" She had no trouble removing most of both large toe nails. Ick! I only had fungal infection on my big toe. She cut the other toenails and they look so pretty...lol. I could only hack at them. I was good for her. She rubbed something on my feet and said they looked fine, did not need grinding...lol. But, she did one little place. I could stand for my feet to be rubbed with the oil/lotion every day. 

Tommy had toenails about 1 1/4 inch (1.5 ") long. My doctor removed one from his toe that got caught on his pants, ripped loose and bled and hung. It was the only good nail he had left today since it grew out. We both tried to cut his nails and could not. The doctor could. 

We both got a prescription for shoes for which Medicare will reimburse us. We both wanted to try on shoes. If you go to a drugstore which is what they recommend, the nurse measures your feet, shoes are ordered and paid for by Medicare. When you pick up the shoes, the shoes cannot be exchanged. 

My big toes have had fungal infection, but the new big toenails coming in have no fungus. It never spread to other toes. I cured it with Vicks Vaporub. I have probably smelled like Vicks but I am old and don't care! 

We went SAS (San Antonio Shoe) store and he got shoes, loved them and wore them home. Mine had to be ordered in my size. They will be delivered to the store and we will go pick them up. My shoes cover my feet but have little vents in the top, not what I wanted, but I suppose they will do for snow and rain. I really only want to wear my sandals.

Tommy's shoes he wore every day had huge holes in the bottom and he was exposing his feet to doctor's office floors, asphalt in parking lots, grass in yard and other places. It is a wonder he has not cut his feet or picked up a disease. 

He bought some WM Crocs to wear to the doctor when he did not want them to see his feet touching surfaces. But, that was just a month ago. NOW, he still insists on wearing the holey shoes everyday  and save the good shoes. He refuses to wear the croc knockoffs in the yard because he does not want stuff getting on his feet from the little holes. But, it is okay to walk in the rain and grass. Some logic. 

But, for three years he has ranted and raved when I mentioned going to SAS for shoes because they are expensive.  Ha Finally, he was willing to pay the price before he found out he could get them for free. 

I mentioned to the doctor about my feet being sweaty and she told me to use a spray-on antiperspirant deodorant, forgot the name. So, when I call and find the name, I will spray my feet so they don't sweat or stink. Has anyone heard of this? 

Two weeks ago, I received Swiss cheese at the food giveaway. This week, I got a box of deli ham. So, I had to have rye bread. At the store I was going to buy rye but found rye pumpernickel and remembered I love that. So, I added tangy brown mustard to my rye pumpernickel ham Swiss cheese and was in heaven. THEN, I realized I had had more than a day's ration of sodium. Tommy is not enamored of my choices, so I suppose I will need to freeze some of the bread. Tomorrow, I will add tomato and lettuce to my sandwich. 

The other day, I was saying Rafaella over and over to someone on the phone. When I got off the phone, there were ads on the internet for Rafaella and an email from them. Spooky! 

We went to a church that serves/sells food on the lawn every day of the week. The doctor's office was nearby. We did not like any of their dozen choices, so we decided to come home and have a sandwich of ham and deli roll. 

Today, the skies were blue and cloudless. And, then we watch the weather in Florida.  ugh  At 7 pm, we left to go a block to friend's house to give her food. I was wearing a summer dress, tiny sleeves, knee-length, and loose and billowy. I was cold! The cold air went up the dress to my collarbones. It was like being naked. Tomorrow, I will go the Target for only the third time in my life and look for black leggings. 

This post is disjointed but I don't feel like editing tonight. 

Tonight, he had chicken with bbq sauce, English peas, and sliced tomato. I will have chicken breasts, tomato, Romaine, and green beans. 

Edit: I purchased a paint by number for Christmas for Tommy to paint. This is enrichment for keeping his brain active and we will have a pretty Christmas picture for the wall. Now, I just have to get the wrinkles out for him to start.

Sunday night, I was so exhausted that after I went to the bathroom about 10 pm, I just got into bed and went to sleep. I always comment to Tommy that I am going to bed, but not Sunday night. 

Monday, we had a long day. Well, five hours is too long for me...lol.  I went into multiple stores to try to find shoes for Tommy. All the ones I find online and in the store that have velcro straps are wide. There is no way he can wear a wide shoe! He does not want a sport shoe, just a black pair. He cannot tie his shoes, and he uses his can to loose the velcro and then push it down after he gets his shoes on his feet.

I did buy another pair of SAS sandals for me, identical to the ones I bought in the fall of 2019. I wore the same pair of shoes for that long. I now have a pair to alternate wearing each day. I found a pair for him that was $187, but he will never buy them even if they save money and his feet in the long run. sigh

At Publix I found the Lindt for half price and bought that, plus a pink bunny PEZ dispenser for me. 

Since I have been sleeping a bit better at night, I have not been taking several naps a day. But, Monday, I did take a short nap. I suppose I dreamed the whole time. I also suppose I heard the Rod Stewart cd end, because I called out, "Tommy, did the TV go off?" I suppose I then awoke. It was all so confusing that I just went back to sleep. 

Monday, I had to hurry and get dinner done because a Hemingway documentary was coming on. Tommy had a piece of ham and I had two boiled eggs. I made a small green bean casserole and we had leftover slaw. 

I really enjoyed the Hemingway documentary, part 1 of 3 parts. I was pleased that every sample of his writing and composing they showed onscreen, I recognized the work of his. I have read most of Hemingway's writing during and after I studied his works in a burdensome 12 week course and Kentucky Wesleyan. I did not hate Hemingway for 12 weeks, just other courses. Now, I want to reread all of Hemingway.

One Problem Solved

I had Tommy call the guy about getting the trash as part of the deal of giving him things from my yard. He then called me. He told Tommy he did not agree to that. Tommy heard all that happened. He whined and repeatedly told Tommy he did not want to go to jail. Then, he called me and I told him I did not want to hear anymore, just do it. Then, I hung up.

Neither of us threatened him with jail. We used words like--judge, court, subpoena. I did tell him if he did not come to court after getting subpoena, he would be arrested.

About 5:30 when we were in Cullman tonight, he called me. He said he had to go buy garbage bags and he went on and on about me coming to see it now. I told him before we left Cullman, I was going to check. Finally, because I had to go out in the cold to hear him, and my back was hurting, I hung up after telling him I had to go.

We went by and all the trash was gone. Tommy pointed out he did not need garbage bags because there was one of the orange fences in the box that would hold all down with a few of the pieces of wood on top. So, it is done and I can move to the next train wreck.

On the last post a blogger pointed out I could move on to someone else and have the next one be unreliable, too. YES!

We had things to do in Cullman, today. So we went to a Christmas Party and Dinner. There were at least 30 door prizes and we did not win one. Oh, well. We had a dinner of ham, green beans, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, yeast roll, pound cake and lots of unsweetened tea. We each got a turkey and box of food to make a Christmas dinner. I got one turkey in the freezer and the other wrapped in a blanket. I need to wash the large flat pan to put it on in the refrigerator so it can thaw and not bleed all over the refrigerator. The two boxes of food not cold or frozen will live in the car until tomorrow. I saw a Stovetop Stuffing and a cookie or cake mix in one box and a bunch of cans. So, I will see that soon.

After the dinner and checking my gutter by the road, we went to Publix and to another store where I made a purchase, and entered the $100 grocery giveaway that I won last year. I had nothing in PO Box. rats. I suppose since I get few bills and they don't put junk mail in the PO box, there is rarely anything there. I do get Christmas cards in Tommy's mailbox. YAY!

There was a full moon last night, so the sky should have been really full of light, but it was cloudy. The temp was about 47F, so it was pleasant.

NOW, to the shoes. I bought 2 pair of sandals this summer. Then, I posted I bought a pair of SAS. I know that seems indulgent, so I was trying to explain those were dressy sandals, not ones for support in walking around. I had save to buy the sturdy pair I just bought. That is all. I am not calling the manufacturer. I am not unhappy with any of my sandals. Remember, I tend to buy sandals when I find ones that fit and wear them for years and years. I figure I am set in sandals for quite a few years.

After the meal and Santa and two turkeys, it was a pleasant drive. We listened to Christmas music. Tomorrow, I go to get gift cards for the four grandchildren and take to the PO. My tree is so pretty after putting on all the tinsel/icicles. Tommy said I could tape the Christmas cards to the door, so it is looking more like Christmas.

I am tempted to go and get tiny light to decorate my window like another blogger, forgot who. Speak up if it was you!

Shoes

On Tuesday I wore my new shoes for the first time--the white sandals with just a bit of heel. They were very comfortable, but I can see the heel is not as wide and stable as my others were. However, it feels like I am walking on a cloud. I did not realize it, but they are wide width. Oh, well.

My shoes did not come in that I ordered. I was getting no help from the sales girl who was tied to her phone and some kid/bf visiting, so I just told them to cancel the order. They don't need my business. I suppose I should not have been so ticked off and hasty.

I googled the pair I wanted and found an online outlet that sells SAS returns. The ones I want are $14. That is what I call a deal and a steal. I intend to check this out more thoroughly.

We had a store here that sold used shoes. Some of the shoes looked like they had been worn for years and returned. Some were in the box and pristine. The owners said when models wear shoes for catalog shoots or on a runway, the shoes never are put back into stockn for sale. So, on occasion, I was able to get shoes for kids and me that were extremely cheap and had maybe only been worn for an hour indoors during a photo shoot.

Actually, some of the shoes had never  been on a foot. The shoes had just been photographed for the catalog or other kind of print advertisement. When my son was about eleven, I found blue-suede -Sunday dress shoes for him--$4. Adults commented on his "blue-suede shoes." I think they were nubuck. The store was about a mile from me, so I could check it out every day since it was a quarter of a mile from grocery in one direction and several blocks from middle school. I managed to get there once a month.

Okay, I have started the process of throwing shoes out and transferring old shoes to my car and Tommy's. I got the old sandals into mine but forgot to put a pair in his. I will uncover more shoes, I am quite sure, ones I will throw out.

J, the meth addict gave me two pair of sandals that I did not wear. I felt funny wearing shoes I thought might have been stolen. I suppose they weren't.  However, I did try on the shoes last week and was shocked to find they fit, are comfortable and leather. They look like they were never worn. I never heard of the brand, Propet, but these are not cheap shoes. These can be for everyday going out. But, the two SAS pair I bought are for dressier looks. Well, anything dressier than going to the grocery store. I would never have picked the two styles or colors, but they are okay for everyday.

Tommy really like the looks of the new white shoe. He asked again the price and made a low sound. This was the pair on sale.

Since I have talked about SAS shoes, googled them, and viewed them, another shoe company wants on the bandwagon and has sent many ads to my laptop. Have you ever heard of Duckfeet shoes?  They have a wide toe box. I really don't need a wide toe box, but I also do not need pointy and flat toe boxes. They look so comfortable.

Have you ever heard of Propet shoes before? Some of them are Medicare approved (free) and some are found at JC Penney's.

Frugal Moves and Decluttering

After washing several loads of laundry, I managed to hang almost all of them. One load had over 20 pairs of panties. The next had linens. The last was five pair of black pants, four dark patterned blouse that are mostly black. Cold water washed all of them. The first two loadshad Oxy-Clean and ALL in them. The last load had only vinegar--no laundry soap.

None of these were a full load, but each load was necessary. I saved money and resources every way possible. The only way I could have done better was to take them to a river and beat them on a rock.

I have left the car sitting in the driveway since Monday except for a Thursday run to get a chocolate cone for $1 at Dairy Queen. I don't know how long this special lasts.

The ac does run day and night, but this is not an area where I am willing to skimp to save money.

There were/are about six pair of my last sandals around here, the ones I bought in 2006. All but one pair will go in the trash. They are so worn I would not insult anyone by offering these. One pair will stay in the car for walking in rain getting back to the house.

In 1998, I found some t-straps that were the most comfortable pair of shoes I have had before or after. It is the only shoe I have ever not kicked off after work to relieve my feet. I bought 6 or 7 pair. I will put one pair in Tommy's car to use for rain walking if I am in his car. Another two will stay in the house to wear to car or in yard for times it is damp out.

They are leather and flat, just what a person needed for a classroom. I also had a job working with disabled individuals in B'ham, so flat comfortable shoes were the thing.

Then, I have two or three pair of flats that do not fit so well since I have gotten fat feet. But, they are wearable as long as I do not have to walk much. They go, too. Since I have diabetes, I am afraid to wear them because they are snug on my toes. No use courting trouble.

The purse I recently retired will be used to hold diabetic supplies--lancets, test strips, and needles. I have enough to fill a purse...lol. I panic when I think I am out and I just don't want to have to search them amongst OTC and that kind of stuff. I use old purses to store things.

A lot of leather is leaving the house. I suppose I was keeping shoes until I found replacements. I have. I have had a tendency to buy multiples when I find a good shoe, then wear one or two pair until I need a replacement which I have stored. This time, I have not found the all-purpose shoe, just comfortable sandals in three styles. I will find it!

Beautiful Tuesday

This has been a glorious day, around 80 and breezy. The skies are blue and the clouds few. It's a rare summer day. Of course, I got hot. 

I set the alarm for 7:30 this morning so I could get up and wash my hair and get to the doctor by 9:30. Since it is only 3 blocks away, I don't worry. However, I set the alarm for pm instead of am, so I suppose if I don't turn off the alarm it will go off in a few minutes. I left wit wettish hair.

Since today is Tuesday free lunch, I did not want to be long in the office. I told Tommy to come and sit at the curb instead of my driveway, and I would just pull in the driveway and come to the car. Since I did not have lipstick in my purse, I ran in and got it and we left for the church. We got there sooner than usual and I applied makeup in the car. 

Tommy really liked my purse. It is too small, so I am going to get a larger one. I cannot carry my Epi Pen, diabetic tester or diabetic shot. Of course, if I left my makeup out, I could...lol

He thought the shoes were pretty and was shocked at the price. But, he knows how many shoes I have bought since I met him in 2006. I thought it over and remembered buying two relatively inexpensive pairs that were leather and cost $39. They were not well-made. 

For lunch we had baked spaghetti, bread, and a salad of lettuce. tomatoes, cheese. I had small piece of pie. The guys were there playing guitars. My friend who had colon cancer was declared free of cancer and had lost 30 pounds since the surgery three weeks ago. 

There was a prescription for shoes awaiting me at the doctor on the country road, so we left to go out there even though I knew the office was closed for lunch. I had a plan.

My best friend who died in May 2001, was buried on the way to the doctor's office. I cried over the names of him and some of his relatives. John had a beautiful stone commemorating his 100 missions over Vietnam, his title--major--and a portion of the poem "High Flight." 

I cried over his cousin's daughter who died too soon as a result of a doctor getting her hooked on opioids and then refusing her more or a way to get off them. Sad. I called her mother and cried more.

We took a little more time to drive since the doctor's office was still not open. The cows and goats looked happy. One yard full of junk held a trolley and an old train engine, the kind with little protection from the elements. It was all pleasant and calm, no rain or forecast of rain. 

We went to a food bank. Frozen fried chicken in a deli box, frozen deli rotisserie  chicken, frozen 3 lbs. ground turkey, 2 apples, 2 oranges, small bag of baby potatoes, wonderful strawberry cake. There was a lot of other stuff that I won't list. He got all the fried chicken and half the fruit, more than half the cake. He got half the garlic bread. I have only listed about half of what I was given.

He got two of the tomatoes from Farm's Market on Saturday and enough greens for two salads. I would give him more but he says he does not want salad every day. I do! 

I cooked 2 lbs of ground pork, added ginger and a bag of slaw. It worked great in the crockpot, and I put the crockpot in the refrigerator overnight. I did not want to buy or eat soy sauce and could not figure out what I did with the rice vinegar. He said it was good, that he would eat it again. I put horseradish on mine. We had green beans and strawberry cake. I ate the cake filling only. 

There are plenty of choices of food here that are not fattening, so I need to eat lots of salads. I have lots of Romaine and market tomatoes. I love salads with a bit of protein. 

I cried too long and too hard today, so feel drained but content.

Saturday Farmer's Market | Sunday Shopping

About 8:15 am. Saturday, I rushed to Farmer's Market and bought a fried peach pie for $2. Then, I bought $6 worth of squash and $6 worth of tomatoes. I used the coupons from the program for low-income seniors. I didn't think about it, but I may make the squash fans for Tommy next time he comes up. He hates basil, but I can hide it and then he  never complains, or I can tell him it is parsley. Basil is growing right out the side door.

Then, I went to a food bank. I have not seen all that was in the box, but some of it. Potatoes--3 lbs., gallon of  milk, eggs, loaf of bread I hate, loaf of rye I love, Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup. can of strawberries, box of generic cereal Tommy will eat, one roll tp, 2 cans green beans, 2 cans mixed vegetables and one of peas--all three he will eat.

I went out later in the day and brought in the rest of the box. Things neither of us will eat--2 cans Spaghettios, Siracha pork and beans, boxed pasta dinner, mac n cheese ,can Great Northern beans. So, I will offer those things to someone else.  Usually, I will only use half of what is in the box. This time was exceptional.

At Walgreen's I used almost all of the gift card from return merchandise from a few days ago. CVS is next door, so I went in to raid the coupon machine and got a $2 off anything  coupon. I needed nothing so I grabbed two of the packages of the 2/$1 potholders. Then, I remembered I did need something and could have just used the coupon on that. Oh, well.

When I left the house Sat. morning, it was 75F degrees. Sounds nice? The humidity was 89%. Not nice. The least exertion left me sweaty, like going down five steps and walking to the car.

I see a BLT in my future. I may make that for dinner when Tommy comes. He is sooo happy to get a BLT. The squash casserole will go with that just fine. Well, it won't be like squash and creamed corn that I was going to serve the other day. I had cooked all the other squash and will make this ahead so I don't have to heat up the kitchen.

Yes, I comment on heat, but I really do much prefer heat to cold.

I remembered Medicare recipients can get one pair of shoes per year if the doctor prescribes them. I am quite sure sandals are not approved but I can get some closed-toe shoes for winter. By the way, Medicare is for all those 65 years. My friend who had more money than God got her free/reduced shoes from Medicare. Or, maybe they were 80% off. It is still a good deal.

Sunday

As I said earlier, I am getting shabby looking. I needed a purse. I asked Tommy if he had noticed my purse was getting worn looking. He exclaimed, "Yes!" Then, he described how it was looking worn. Now, for a man who just doesn't notice these things, this was a surprise.

Belk was having a back-to-school sale, so  I went fearing the crowd. But, I did find the next to last cart to lean on. I described the purse I wanted and the clerk found it. Perfect! It was $220. I passed on that. The only other leather one I liked was a SAK, $169. Now, that was still too high, but it was on sale.

I went to the shoe department to rest and look at shoes and ask if they carried SAS. No, they did not, but I saw $55 Clark "rubber" sandals that would be perfect for house shoes in the hospital. They could be washed off so I do not have to wear germy shoes. They were reduced to $34, still too high. Then, I saw a sign about 15% off and a 20% off coupon.

I asked about this and found out I would get an extra 15% off all purchases today and a 20% off coupon for next week. I also got a percentage off if I updated my cc. I went for all of it. I probably will use the coupons for a bra next week. Maybe I won't use it.

Then, I started thinking none of this information was given to me for the purse. I asked her if she could return it and redo it with the extra percentage off. The other clerk lost that sale. In the end, I paid $22 for the Clark's sandals. The purse was $89. I know those are outrageous prices and I should not put it on a cc. BUT, I did the best I could on the prices. Before I pay it off, the charges will be minimal. Purses were not included in the no tax weekend.

No, I cannot shop at a thrift store. AND, purses that are not leather wear out very quickly. In 1985, I bought a purse for $100 and used it for ten years. Then, I gave it to a friend who cried because she had been praying for a purse because hers had torn up. In church, she showed it off as she testified up front. She used it for at least three more years.

When you cannot walk far, you will see the problems with shopping. In the past I have found clothing, purses, and shoes in yard sales and was not too proud to buy them and wear them. I am selling things, so maybe I can pay this off next week.

New Shoes

The last time I bought shoes was in 2006. My favorite brand of sandals was being discontinued and were on sale. So, I bought eight pair. Tommy knew I bought three pair but I kept the others a secret. Oh, I eventually told him. It all puzzled him, but it was my money. Over the years I got out one pair after another. Now, the last pair looks really scuzzy. AND, I found out they were flat, hurting my feet.

J, the meth addict, gave me two pair of leather sandals. One pair is soooo comfortable. The other pair is comfortable except for hurting my big toe. Both pair are light colored and are starting to look less than nice.

Since I sold something, I splurged on two pair of SAS sandals. I had heard these were pricey, comfortable, and long lasting.  They are pricey and oh, so comfortable. We will see about the durability.

I found a pair that I wanted in black, so I ordered those. They will be here in August when I can afford them. They will be my everyday pair. The others look dressy, one black and one white. My feet don't hurt.

My feet suffer without good shoes. Now, I have to find a closed pair for winter.

I have become shabby looking. When I feel so sick, I just don't care. When I do care and feel bad, I do not even feel like doing anything about it, shopping anywhere.

Today, there were about ten parking spaces in front of the store and on the block on the highway that runs through town. I knew that was a sign I should shop...lol.

The traffic was terrible today. I could not figure out why. I was driving on the two highways that cross in this town. And, it is Friday. But, still....I finally figured it out. The woman gave me the total on the two pair of shoes. I asked how much it was with tax. She reminded me it was "not tax" for back-to-school-no-tax weekend. Good deal for me.

EDIT: I forgot to say that I immediately took my shoes to the shoe shop and had tap-like plastic pieces put on the heels so I won't wear the heels off so soon.

So many people tell me they wear PayLess Shoes. I cannot. Do you have to spend more for shoes? Are you the lucky who can wear anything without pain?
