Ball and Bulbs

Once in a while, I decide to check on canning supplies when in stores. I got lucky last weekend and found a box of Ball canning jar lids and rings. There was only one box. However, there were two boxes of lids for large mouth jars, so I got two of those.

With the short life of the new lids, I am loathe to buy any more for fear they will go bad before I can use them. That's okay because I am using jars for dry storage, cannisters, leftovers. There were jars but I barely noticed how many or what kind as I have plenty. Of course, those here have rings and lids.

Monday was supposed to be rainy. But, it was not, and I had cancelled a doctor's appointment. Rats!

Sunday, I sort of straightened and cleaned the front porch. There were pots to toss, the black nursery kind.  It looks so much better for two minutes attention. I have Purple Prince tulips and daffodils to plant in pots soon. I have pots to plant other bulbs, too.

Dinner on Sunday night--Chicken Cordon Bleu (given to me) for both of us. He had the rest of the quinoa with vegetables and the zucchini. I had a portion of a salad that was not good to me.  I ate it for the nutrition.

Dinner Monday night--baked chicken breasts, two small red potatoes (one for each of us), green beans.

Do you ever plants two kinds of bulbs together so they will bloom together? The purple tulips and bright yellow daffodils are gorgeous.

  1. I love tulips and daffodils. They are the best. I don't plant them here in Florida, I don't think it gets cold enough for them.

    2. Lisa,
The bulbs from Lowe's says they can be planted in your area and Florida in Oct through Dec.

  2. I have some big red tulips that I planted not long after we moved into our home. When our daughter was about 15 months old I took a picture of her sitting on a blanket in front of those big red tulips. Hopefully, this coming spring our little Granddaughter who is 8 months old now will be able to come and get her picture in front of those same tulips. I think her 11 year old brother will have to pose separately, Even sitting in front of the tulips he is now so tall he would cover them up.

I love big red tulips, and grape hyacinths. I think a patch of the pastel hyacinths that are shaped like bells and have a lovely scent look so pretty in Spring. The sweet yard bunnies must be able to smell them a mile a way, because they eat them unless I put chicken wire around them.

I also have a patch of big very dark irises that my Mom helped me plant during the first year we were in our house. So they are over 40 years old now. Each year when I see them, I think of us laughing and having fun planting them, and hope that she knows they are still blooming after all of this time. So many years, and people we loved have passed, but the irises still bloom each year.

    1. susie,
What a nice tradition! I lost all my Naked Ladies I got from my beloved neighbor after she died. I have mourned that loss--neighbor and her tulips.

  6. I have planted tulips together in planters. My fave combos are pink and yellow or pink and orange. I don't put daffodils in a planter; they come back very reliably they go in the ground. I consider modern hybrid tulips a "one and done" bulb. Unlike botanical tulips, which reliably rebloom and multiply but aren't nearly as showy as the moderns.

  7. I often plant several bulb gardens in large pots. I plant assorted bulbs first, placing the variety that grow tallest in the center. After the bulbs are in I plant pansies and alyssum right on top of them. When the bulbs emerge they just push themselves right up through the flowers on top.

    1. Janet,
I love the pansies on top. I had heard of planting something over bulbs but forgot what to plant. Thanks. I am going to do this. I really need much larger pots than I own.
