Syrup Shortage? Outing Cancelled and Dogs

My friend said she went to Walmart, needing syrup among other things. She said there was not one bottle. A whole section was empty. I still have half a bottle of maple syrup. It should last me a year because I eat little syrup. Have you discovered a shortage of syrup?

The plan for Saturday was to go to a Poke Salet Festival on Saturday. Well, I did not sleep much, so it was iffy. There was a 40% chance of rain and the event was 2 hours away, a 4-hour trip. In spite of everything, we decided to go. Well, my digestive system thwarted the plans. I felt I needed to stay near a bathroom. THEN, I felt like I was going to throw up. We stayed home. Really, I could have gone since all symptoms vanished later and it never rained when we would have been on the road and not even around our route.

We took a ride close by and looked for yard sales. The few we found did not look like I would find anything. There I go, being judge-y again.

This morning, Saturday, the neighbors obviously did not let the dogs out. I have not heard one little bark all day long! Obviously, these dogs only bark when everyone leaves home.

Have you found a syrup shortage? Any other shortage?

  1. I can't say we're seeing shortages of anything (other than sunflower oil) over here touch wood. I suppose potato chips shelves are a little sparse but since I don't care for them it hasn't affected me. LIDL was pretty abysmal the other week but the cashier told me they were getting a delivery that afternoon and seemed to be short staffed trying to get the stuff on the shelves, but other supermarkets were fine.

    1. Treaders,
I went to another store and the shelves were sparse where syrup was stocked. So, not sure what the deal is. I will live without potato chips. I like them, but try to never buy chips. "Short-staffed" is the reason for everything, it seems.

  2. The Amish in this area said they didn't get as much "maple water" to make syrup this year. About 1/3rd less than last year. I noticed the price increased also even buying from them as the cost of jars and lids was so high.

    1. Chef,
I had not heard about the maple harvest. This was also the fake syrup, so something must be amiss all over.

    3. If the manufacturers of syrup bottles could get their hands on the plastic trash on shelves, there would be no shortage of syrup bottles.

  3. We have the same bottle I think it's over a year old as neither use it but for flavoring. I haven't noticed any shortages or terrible proportions. There seems to be always 'some' if only the more expensive 'organic' or fancy types of products.

    1. Urspo,
True about the more expensive options. At the store I found syrup, there was little left, so I wonder what is going on.

  4. I have plenty of syrup in storage and at least 25 lbs of brown sugar so I can make my own. I also have mapleine for flavor. I found a good sale on large bottle s of syrup about 6 months ago and bought 6. If sh*t hits the fan we can survive on WW hotcakes and eggs a syrup.

    1. Kim,
It sounds like you are well-prepared! I never heard of mapleine. I did buy real maple flavoring, found with spices long ago in stores and discontinued now. If the sh*t hits the fan, I will get more chickens. Tommy says no to them, but I imagine in an emergency, he would allow it. Yes, I know now is the time, not in an emergency. Enjoy your hotcakes.

  5. I like Mapleine and maple extra for flavoring cookies, along with substituting any sugar with maple syrup. Because just maple syrup alone won't give you enough maple flavor. In my opinion.

Last year this time maple syrup was super low in price. I stocked up and have enough to last until Armageddon. And I will be eating maple cookies when it hits! LOL!

    1. Sue,
I never use it for flavoring. And, I rarely eat it since I don't need the sugar. What I will do once a year is mix peanut butter and maple syrup and make a sandwich.

    2. My mother babysat two little boys (actually distant cousins) who ate PB & maple syrup sandwiches! I thought it was totally bizarre at the time, but I have come to my senses and understand the holy union of PB & maple syrup. Amen!

  6. I love yard sailing. We do slow drive-bys to decide if they look worth stopping at. We avoid ones that are all clothes or kitchen dishes.

    1. Breenlantern,
I would not avoid kitchen dishes. Right now, I want some Corelle dishes and hate all the new patterns. But, the table has to have a certain "feel" from the road. I do avoid the all clothing or baby toy sales. If I knew someone with a baby, I would be up to going to the sales with baby things.
