Remember the sweet potato pie Tommy wanted from Publix? It is awful. I had one piece and gave the rest to him. That is how awful it was. If I find more Beauregards, I will make one. I suppose it will mean a trip to Cullman. Maybe we can buy another 120 lbs. Sweet Potato Bread made from fresh sweet potatoes is scrumptious.
Last week, we had a new fast food item from Arby's--Steak Nuggets. They are not bad, but I will never buy them again. Have you tried them?
Today was another glorious day-- sunny, barely warm and windy. I still cannot spray paint for the wind. Every year, I repaint my three birds. The blue bird is for year-round, black is for Halloween, and the redbird is for Christmas. It is too windy, but it will probably be too cold or wet when the wind dies down. I still have not found my cardinal to paint. I change these birds out seasonally. I made these and have more bodies and wings to glue more of these together.
I had Tommy search for the wreath hanger so I could hang the stack of pumpkins on the front door. I already have three hangers that I cannot find. I searched and searched in big box store, and found two, one in crafts and one with Christmas wreaths. I bought the cheaper. Craft items are always more expensive. When I brought it into the house, the one I knew I had was lying on top of Christmas things right inside of the door!!! grrrr
We went to a home improvement store and could find no one to help us. I suppose we will drive 30 miles to another location. There were so many people trying to help me at the far away location. We need to pick out new fixtures for the house. We only need three more, I think. I may get ceiling fans. The electrician tried to talk us into new-fangled can lights. They are not recessed, just flush on the ceiling and very wide. I hate them. Do you have an opinion about these? Oh, he recommends getting rid of all the lamps!/? I definitely won't consult him for style tips.
Going to bed now. I have to go to doctor tomorrow.
I’ve not tried the Arby’s steak nuggets, but saw them advertised and want to try them. Did you find them tough?
ReplyDeleteI would not get rid of your lamps. I love ours and think they make a home nice and cozy.
Belinda,
DeleteQuite the opposite. The texture was like a very tender roast, yet sort of mushy like. Other people like that. I don't.
I have no intention of getting rid of my lamps. I sort of collect lamps. There are only three in this room.
I have recessed overhead lights in the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry room, closets, sunroom and upstairs hallway. The housing itself, while the bulb is flush with the ceiling, isn’t can lighting, though. (And you will need to find an electrician to explain the difference because I certainly don’t remember.) I like them. I had to unscrew a glass shade in order to change the overhead bulbs in our farmhouse, making changing the bulbs a two person job. I don’t really notice my overhead lights in the kitchen, other than they work. I have task lighting under the cabinets on the counters too, which is a godsend for aging eyes!
ReplyDeleteI prefer the ambience of lamps to overhead lighting. The overhead (4 recessed bulbs spaced in the ceiling controlled by one switch ) in the sunroom is on a dimmer switch, which makes it cozier, but even so, I tend to only use my table lamp in that room, or, if I am reading in the evening, the three way floor lamp behind one of the recliners. I can’t imagine getting rid of lamps!
Here, code puts a maximum on the space between outlets on a wall for new construction. That space is the length of a standard lamp cord so people don’t use extension cords, which are a fire hazard. We put even more outlets (receptacles, they’re called) than code demanded, as I am wary of extension cords. Not only are they a fire hazard , they are a tripping hazard too! Older homes (the home I grew up in was 100+ years old) don’t tend to have an abundance of outlets, so extension cords are used for table lamps, (and electric typewriters, hair dryers, toasters…you get the point) which isn’t safe. LED can lights are a way to address that problem in older homes. That said, it is a bit of a cold, sterile look, isn’t it?
Laughing with you (not at you) trying to find someone to help you in a home improvement store—there was a skit on “Beavis and Butthead” about that decades ago, and it still rings true today! I used to walk around muttering “damn hippie kids” when we would try to track down an employee. I finally had to find the clip to show my kids. Still hilarious. Still accurate.

i have never seen that skit, so I will have to find it. Task lighting is planned here, too.
DeleteLamps are a passion of mine, so that guy won't be able to dissuade me from using lamps. In my den I had three floor lamps with four in each one. There were three arms with one bulb each,y a light on top and a foot light operated with my foot. I had one quirky lamp with one bulb. My friends made fun of my lamps. Idiots! I hand made the lampshades and sold them for several hundreds of dollars each. Sterile lighting turns me off. I am hiring these guys for their electrical skills not their style design.
I don't care for sweet potato (or pumpkin) pie, but DH says Miss Patty LaBelle's sweet potato pie (at Walmart) is the bomb. I can certainly vouch for her peach and blackberry cobblers. SO GOOD!
ReplyDeleteI don't know if we can get Beauregard sweet potatoes in New England. They are not as sacred to Yankees as they are to Southerners, and stores don't label the varieties they carry. Put a stamp on one and mail it to me, please! LOL.
I have no idea what "newfangled" ceiling lights you are talking about. Can you give us a picture?
LED can lights are available in 3- and 4-inch diameters, and are much nicer looking than the old 6-inch style. I have them all over my house and love them. The quality of (the warm, not cool) light is fantastic. And the LED has saved us so much on electric bills.
Your electrician is a fool and a half for telling you to get rid of your lamps. Every room needs mid-level lighting from floor and/or table lamps. What a mansplaining clown!
Sue,
DeletePumpkin and sweet potato pies are my family's favorite, especially pumpkin.
Unfortunately, stores don't label, but farmer's markets do.
The electrician said they about six inches across and flush with the ceiling. He showed me several. I told him NO every time he showed them to me...lol.
