Today was a crazy, unusual day. I finally took half of a 5mg melatonin at 6 am. I know--crazy. I woke at about 11 am. Tommy was eating. I was dizzy and discombobulated feeling. Tommy packed me something to eat. I got dressed, grabbed half a diet Mt. Dew. We left by 12:30.
We arrived at out destination, hung around. Finally, we were told the event was cancelled and when it would happen. So, we left for Big Box and remembered another event was cancelled. Arrived there and found out it had been cancelled, too. sigh.
Off to Big Box. I found Christmas Snowmen, chocolate, of course, to save for closer to Christmas. I ate just one. Then, I ate the rest after dinner. My children will not be surprised at my reaction to chocolate.
We are watching Hoarding for the Holidays. These people have more Christmas things than department stores. The stories are amazing. One person, among other things, has hundreds of blow molds along with rooms of trees and all sorts of decorations.
I think of Anne with her one room. But, these people have massive basements in rather large homes and shops and warehouses, and they are bringing more in. They have storage units with Christmas. This program will be on next Tuesday night.
This program has inspired me to go and buy more Christmas anything. I almost bought a
Electricians are coming in the morning. We don't know which room they are rewiring first. He wants to move things that will be hardest instead of uncovering outlets the easy way. I hope he gets over his ideas before the guys show up. They will veto them, I am quite sure.
39F here right now. My toes feel it. This has not been edited.
Do you know anyone with an extreme hoarding/collections of Christmas decorations?
A friend was at a yard sale last month and a lawn near the yard sale home was full of Halloween decorations. 12' skeletons, and all sorts of things. The yard was full. She took a picture to show me. She heard that the people do not have enough storage space to keep all of the Halloween decor, so they rent a storage unit for $150 per month - just for Halloween decor!

DeleteAlice,
Thanks for that. I cannot spending that much money to store decorations for Halloween. They could buy a storage building for that kind of money. Amazing!
Seeing a show like that would make me want to do exactly the opposite of you, and remove decorations from my storage closet. I prefer things plain anyway. I do have seasonal quilts I have made, and an Autumn lantern. We grow a variety of pumpkins, and I decorate with those. Christmas we have an artificial tree which goes up after Thanksgiving dinner, and a real tree that goes up when the brood decides to go get one..A tradition was born one year of them sneaking one another out of school early without permission to go pick out a tree and then get teriyaki, but traditions change with the years. Beyond that I have a few Christmas candleholders and table runners, as well as a set of fine China I use daily from Thanksgiving until Christmas. As for paying to store items…I can barely justify the ornaments things taking up space in my cupboard under the stairs! I don’t understand the mindset.
ReplyDeleteMeg,
DeleteIt is the quality of the ancient decorations that is the draw for me.
I refuse to buy any more Christmas and am trying to get my kids to take some of mine.
ReplyDeleteKim,
DeleteI was looking at decorations yesterday. But, it was only window shopping. I have enough!
I did want to watch that Xmas Hoarder show but missed it. Oh well!
ReplyDeleteI don't like the rampant consumerism behind hoarding. The idea that happiness can be purchased is nonsense, and contributes to drowning our planet in crap.
I'm not against decorations at all. But they shouldn't engulf your everyday life. Meg, your idea of decorating sounds lovely; practical yet special. It's a tricky balance!
Sue,
DeleteAll of these decorations in collections are not new at all. Some of these are true antiques, vintage, or just old and saved. No, won't drown the planet and crap. The way it overwhelms some of the lives of these people is amazing. That show comes on next week, too.
I see people with hoarding all day long. It is not something I relate to; I tend to get rid of things.
ReplyDeleteUrspo,
DeleteI will find I am keeping something 'just in case I need it." Then, I will get rid of all of it as it become clear I will never use it. Or, I sell things.
