Best Material for DIY Masks
When I started wondering if a filter material were being sold for masks, naturally, I looked it up. The results are surprising. The ones I have commercially made masks. However, I only have a few, so I might end up making some having read this information.

I have 2 boxes I bought last year. Hubby carries one box with him while he is hauling. IF we run out... yes I will be making them. Thank you for doing the research for me. I read through it and bookmarked the site.

DeleteIt is good you do have some. I started wondering what else I could use when the four or five I have are no longer viable. When I can, I intend to buy the tiny elastic for them. Tommy has drawers of tshirts that are not worn at all. Somewhere, I have tons of tshirt fabric. You are welcome. I am going to your blog to see what is happening.
I dont plan to make masks, they aren't super popular here so I wont be ridiculed if I dont and I dont like how uncomfortable they are. i am staying home a LOT though

DeleteLots of people here don't wear them. I only see maybe 6 masks being worn in huge super stores. I am sure some ridicule me in their mind, but I don't care. I figure I only have to come across one person throwing off the virus to maybe die. I never get out of the car without a mask on. Actually, I have worn two different kinds and I am surprised at how comfortable they are. I though they would press on my lips and nose, but they don't. Stay in and stay safe.

ReplyDeleteYes, I'm making masks. First ones - outer layer and lining are woven fabrics I had from making shirts in the 80s. Yes, my stash is old. Both are faced with non woven interfacing, the sew-in kind, not iron-on (melted glue would suffocate me!)
Second bunch are a cotton sheet with a nice high thread count...label was cut off when I cut the bottom up years ago to make napkins, so I don't know the number. Same interfacing.
There's no elastic to be had in our county, but between my stash and my mother's I have plenty. When it's gone there's always the huge amount of bias binding from the 1950s when my mom and great aunt were in a sewing circle making aprons and pot holders for the Eastern Star bazaar. I think some of it's older than I am (nearly 73).
This can be a good moneymaker for you if your fabric stash is still large.
