Big, Fat Hen

Monday, I re-baked the hen, and it was more tender, not really tender. Tommy and I had a meal from it on Sunday and Monday. There is leg and thigh still on the bone. I took off the breast meat and have enough for at least three more meals. Tommy took the rest of the meat off the carcass. He probably has enough for five meals. So, we have eaten four meals from it and have enough for 3+5 meals in the future and four from the past. That makes 12 meals from this 6.5 hen. We might get more meals.

I think the hen or chicken, whatever they called it was old. She probably quit laying, so they butchered her. Okay, maybe not, but I wonder. Tomorrow, I will put in the refrigerator something else to thaw, probably a turkey, turkey breast, or turkey breast roast. I think a roast is a boneless breast. I do have many packages of breasts. I might add a package of thighs for Tommy.

Monday night, he had a large portion of mixed vegetables and brown meat from leg and thigh, and cranberry sauce. I had breast meat and cranberry sauce and salad. Tuesday night the meat will be on a salad since we have salad that needs eating before it goes to waste.

My blogger has spell-check on the screen. I don't have to click on anything on the menu to use it. At first, I only noticed it when commenting. Now, I see it here when I type a post. Try it. Deliberately type a word wrong and see how two blue lines are under the misspelled word.

Click on it and choices for spelling appear. The blue lines appear under each and every word and disappear when you move past that word. Maybe you have already seen it and used it. If this function had to be installed, I must have accidentally installed the function.

Tommy's toe where he has no toenail looks fine. There was very little blood on the band aid and that was at the base of the nail.

Monday was a rainy and stormy day early, and miserably dismal all day. I did not step foot from the house. Tommy only went out to the road to get mail.

Tuesday lunch--we both had a turkey sandwich. Tommy put bbq sauce and mustard on his. I had a halo with mine.

I received my first Christmas card today, from a blogger. I suppose I should be addressing and sending out mine. Have you sent cards yet?

  1. My spell check is acting up and because I have used it for so long, I have forgotten how to spell....

    1. Kim,
I need it for typos! I think I am still spelling everything I ever could. But, that could go any minute.

  2. I just mailed out my bloggers' Christmas cards today and realized after I'd mailed them that I think I wished them a happy 2021! Brain fog!

We are probably all so brain-fogged that we won't notice.

  3. Will he get a toenail back or is that it? With toenail fungus, I've heard the nail doesn't grow back if removed.

I had not asked, but I just did. He said the doctor said it should grow back.

  4. You got a lot of meals from the hen. I can only get 2 meals for 2 people out of our chickens, maybe 3 meals if I save all the bones for soup. I sent my cards about 2 weeks ago. It's a good thing because many of them are taking awhile to reach the recipients. I've been getting phone calls here and there when they arrive. I always think about more cards to send so today I have a few more to add and post when I take a parcel to be mailed. Have a wonderful evening.

    1. Joyful,
That is 12 meals for two people, so six meals for the two of us. I hate when I have to keep sending because I forgot! Dishes are on the agenda this evening. It will be wonderful to get the dishes done and see what is on tv for Christmas. Thanks.

    2. I didn't forget to add people to my card list. It is an annual issue I have to shorten the list. Each time I reduce the list I end up adding more. I always think it's a good time to be in touch with people.

    3. Joyful,
Yes, it is a good time to be in touch. I was fretting because I could not find my cards, but I dug around and found them. So, I can get on with those.

    4. I'm glad you found your cards. Last week I finally sorted my cards and took stock of what I have. I now have all cards in a basket in one place rather than 3. It will be easier in future to know what inventory I have. Have fun writing out your cards and messages.

I was a bit panicky, but they were found easily, not lost, just covered up.

  6. I’ve not sent any cards out yet, but I plan to soon. Glad Tommy’s toenail is OK, I’ve lost one before and it did grow back.

I have one addressed and forgot to send it today! ARGH I thought that toenails always grew back.

  7. I am behind on getting cards out-and I have several international ones that might be New Years cards at this point! I admire that you and Tommy can be satisfied with the same meat for so many meals. We both get too bored. I've made soup and goulash this week and have so many leftovers, I am already bored with them but I'll not intentionally waste.

    1. SAM,
I am afraid my international cards will be New Years cards, too! Usually, the vegetables change, sometimes not. If the food is good, I will keep eating it.

  8. I did not know that re-baking a hen would tenderize it. Hmm. Food for thought...LOL.
I don't send out cards because I am extremely lazy. I love getting them, though. Although I seem to get fewer with each passing year. I can't figure it out... hahaha!

    1. Sue,
Actually, I was just finishing cooking it. I don't think it is a tenderizing method.

I wonder why you get fewer and fewer each year? LOL
