Friday This and That

Friday, we cooked two pounds of bacon in the oven and had BLTs. Yum! A bag of salad and Roma tomatoes were used. This was lunch and will be lunch tomorrow. Tommy sat on his walker and looked in the oven every three minutes. He did not enjoy throwing away bacon when we burned it a couple of weeks ago. So, he guarded it with the promise of a BLT.

The best part was that I now have a cup of bacon grease. Maybe in the morning I will have scrambled eggs cooked in a tbsp of bacon grease. The skillet is non-stick, but a taste of oil or bacon grease or butter is good.

Using one little vial of the eyedrops has kept my eyelashes from being sticky. However, my eyelashes hurt, not the lashes, but the base. It feels like they are bruised and swollen. I imagine this is from incessant rubbing of my eyes. If they are not better after a few more days of not rubbing, I will ask my eye doctor what is happening when I get a new eyeglass prescription.

It was overcast and a pleasant temperature all day until about 3 pm when we were out. After heavy sprinkles, the sun came out and the air was palpable, muggy. However, even with the mugginess, we sat in the park and ate Drumsticks, enjoying the freshly washed scenery and the sky.

We made a trip to shop from the bedroom, removing a box of Wheat Thins, tomato paste, unsweetened Jello, and Ziploc quart storage bags. All this was bought on sale. The storage bags were Christmas clearance. I wonder what the price is now. I like shopping from the bedroom. I did get the 48 can of tuna moved into the room. I will get it in place another day as my back was hurting and it was late.

Tonight, I realized I have not been bitten by one mosquito, and I only saw one in February. Have you seen mosquitoes or have been bitten? Do they sing about, threatening to bite you?

For dinner, I sliced the kind of ham that is in a roll and cooked those slices even though they are fully cooked. We had ham, coleslaw and sliced tomatoes.

Are you shopping from your pantry stash? Mosquitoes about?

  1. I always have a lot of food stored, so I can go quite a while without shopping at a store. Though I did do a little cherry picking this week.

If I am outside no one has to wear bug spray because they feast on me (always have) and ignore everyone else. There is one particular the of mosquito and when bitten I react with whelps about the size of a quarter. Luckily after about an hour the reaction has subsided but the itch remains.

    1. I see, you take one for the gang. I keep those huge welts for a day. And, the itch stays for weeks. Maybe I can stand near you. I read that a person with type O blood attracts the most mosquitoes.

  2. How sweet that Tommy guarded the bacon. đź’• He must love his BLTs. They are so good and refreshing. I haven’t seen any mosquito but then again I don’t go out there much at dusk when they usually appear.

    1. Belinda,
We threw out a pound of bacon, and he wanted to eat his BLT this time. Staying in is one way to keep from being bitten. But, there is a huge crack between the door and facing where they have come into this house before.

  3. BLT sounds wonderful - a favorite for me.
I get eat up by mosquitoes. Every evening before dusk I am outside collecting pet food dishes and I get eat up. I use what I can to deter them, but I am allergic to most bug sprays.
I shop from home every week.
    Have a good day.

    1. Cheryl,
Try putting a little vinegar on your wrists and ankles or wherever. It will keep them away for a little bit until you can get back into the house.

  4. I am not outside enough anymore to get bitten by mosquitoes. I'd rather still be able to work out in my flower beds and get bit by mosquitoes, than all of the various other things that have been keeping me out of my flower beds.
I try too keep certain things stocked in my little cupboard, and always try to remember when one item goes to replace it on the next shopping trip. I have been eating peaches for the last couple of weeks that came from a local grower, but were at the grocery store. I hope peach season keeps on here for a little longer, but I think usually they are all gone by about this time in August, sometimes earlier. Maybe they are around later this year because we had such a cold long drawn out spring.
We are having weather that will only go up to 86 degrees today, It should be nice until the storms come later. It is such a relief from those terrible hot days we had all summer.

    Have an enjoyable day today.

    1. I have not gotten peaches yet. It seems it is raining when I want to go to peach country, or I don't get to the market. I may do that today.
Even on a day that does not reach 90, the rain is holding it down and the humidity is suffocating. So, I would rather have the heat. I cannot breathe in our high humidity.

  5. I saw my ophthalmologist this week and she commented on my dry eyes. She recommended warm water compresses for 5 minutes every morning. She also gave me Systane All in 1 eyedrops for dry eyes.

  7. We haven't had many mosquitos because we have been so dry. Boy are we getting the rain today though so I'm sure I'll be bitten soon. LOL

    1. Vickie,
I hate you will be bitten, but I suppose you need rain after a dry spell.

  8. I burn bacon when I cook it in the oven so I just use my electric fry pan and watch it. Right now it is so expensive!

    1. Kim,
That is a good idea. I usually watch bacon in an iron skillet. But, cannot stand long. We had burned it to a crisp in the oven, hence Tommy sitting in front of the oven. Very expensive!
