Decisions Based on Covid19

Tonight, after hearing more about meat shortages, I will take actions. Tomorrow, I will take the sponge cake, breads, anything not meat from the tiny freezer over the refrigerator. We will eat or dispose of them, making more room for chicken. Today, I gave away food at the store where the poorest people shop. I will buy boneless, skinless chicken breasts. Plus, I will buy more canned meat--chicken and beef.

Yes, I did stock up on chicken before. But, now I need to do more.

Week before last, as we went to Cullman, I was disgusted by my haircut, bangs specifically. The first store I went into was a grocery store that has a $1 aisle. I found a pair of children's scissors and bought them. In the car, I gathered up my bangs and held onto the ends and cut above the ends I was holding. Perfect? NO. Almost right? No! Happy? Blissfully so.

Yes, I did cut my bangs before the present virus. But, once in a while I did have it all cut and evened up.

I have my garden with cabbage, kale, red lettuce, and Romaine. Also 3 herbs. I did sow carrots. Now, I am saving clamshell containers for lettuces, planning to plant one each week. I suppose i will have to purchase a drill to get holes in the new garbage can so i can plant potatoes. I have not decided what else, but i am planting more food--squash, zucchini, tomatoes, garlic and onions.

Yes, I was set to have this garden before the virus, but now I am more interested than ever in having more food.

When I exited the PO, I saw something red. Tommy thought I dropped something. But, i bent over to pull up the wild strawberry. Maybe i can grow these in the edges of pots. I love them, but so did the ground suqirrels/chipmunks, and other things in my yard. Eventually, there were no more! I think these will spread. I will plant regular strawberries, too.

Yes, I always ate the wild strawberries, but now I want them to spread down here.

Yes, I am going to make masks. I may wear them in the spring and fall after all this is over. My allergies might be less. idk

Other than staying at home, what decisions have you made since Covid19 concerns took over?

  1. A lot of people are becoming more interested in growing food, so much that it is difficult to buy seeds!

I havent made any real decisions since covid except I am trying harder to get regular exercise. It might be covid related but not consciously, I think it's just time

    1. kylie,
Yes, some things we do because it is time we did it. I need more exercise, too. What seeds would you buy if they were there? Herbs? tomatoes? what?

    2. y'know, you can get some seeds from the produce you buy. Especially things like squash, pumpkins, tomatoes and zucchini, You can also regrow some things planting them back in some soil after you cut off the tops to use, like green/spring onions and celery. You can also get sweet potato sprouts from cutting one in half and putting it in some water.

    3. chipmunk,
I have saved seeds in past years. And, I do regrow some things. In a few weeks I will commence growing sweet potato starts. I have done that for the plants in the window, but never have planted any. I have a picture on my old blog of celery regrowing, onions, too. Isn't it fun to do things like that? Right now, I am chitting potatoes.

    1. BQ,
Some days, any haircut is welcome! I suppose Spring cleaning is easier if there is not the regular schedule of things to do.

  3. Wait! I thought i commented here. maybe i did. Do you have comment moderation?
So many people right now are growing things that its impossible to buy seeds, I believe.

I havent made any covid related decisions but I have been trying harder to do some daily exercise. I think I have just tried harder with that because it's time but there could be some sub conscious relationship to the virus

    1. Yes, you did comment. Yes, I do have comment moderation on. Maybe you have time now to do what you need to do. I asked what seeds you would buy. ???

  4. I have decided to grow more veggies, too. Leaf lettuce, especially, because I don't trust the boxed anymore; who knows who touched or sneezed on them. Since we have not put up fence since we moved here, I have to plant in containers on the deck because of the deer. It is too high for them to jump up there. I buy more chicken, too. Whole free range and cut them up and freeze. Buying extra raw milk and putting in quart mason jars and freezing. Only go to town once a week now. It is OK.

    1. Tewshooz,
Plant lettuce every few days to keep a good supply. Yes, that lettuce in the store seems iffy to me. Deer can jump high, so check out how high. That is smart to buy and freeze chicken and milk. Wish I had a freezer. I do go to the store more, but I am so careful. Yes, it is okay for me, too.

  5. I have started to build a small garden. It's not something I have been very successful with in the past, but now I will try harder to make it work.

    1. Lisa,
Hopefully, your garden will be good this year. Read lots and talk to others and maybe you can get it right this year. Spend lots of time with them. That seems how I got it right. Talk to your plants. Don't be afraid to pink off leaves. Take care of bugs.

    2. My mother used to play classical music to her plants.

    3. Tewshooz,
I never played music. But, I talked sweet and told them what sweet plants they were.

  6. This morning we woke to yet another hard frost. April 27 in KY is not supposed to be this way! This is the second time frost has killed what my husband has planted.

I think our new normal may include needing to wear masks while out in public for a while after things open again. Especially for those who are most at risk.

I'm working from home due to the virus. And it has changed mine and hubby's Friday night date night. We're eating in - obviously. But we did order take out from one of our favorite restaurants a couple of weeks ago.

    1. Alice,
I lived in Owensboro for several years about 50 years ago. It was not Central AL, lots of cooler weather. Cut the tops off milk jugs or vinegar jugs and twist them over the plants at night. You can use glass jars. But, take them off at sunrise so the plants are not burned.

I think the decision to wear masks for a while is wise. I will wear one for about two years.

Date night at home is better than having one of you die. Thanks.

    2. We do have buckets that we (he) had been putting out if we thought frost was a risk. It was not forecast to be as cold as it ended up being.

Owensboro is lovely! We're closer to Bowling Green.

    3. Alice,
Oh, that is too bad you had a surprise frost! Bummer! I think I would love being closer to Bowling Green. The name is so poetic.

  7. I am still trying to decide what to do about my tutoring business for the summer. COVID-19 have changed how much I get out and about. I wore a mask out yesterday when I went to the grocery store. I also started picking up a few things to add to the stockpile that I would like to get started.

    1. Rachel,
I was thinking about tutoring again since it seems it might be needed. But, I remembered I don't want to become ill. For the stockpile, buy what is on sale that you use. It will add up and you will eat cheaply from now on. Good luck on the stockpile.

  8. I've cut my own hair during this virus and did so before if it needed it. No one is going to see me anyway, so what does it matter to me? I'm just glad to have it out of my eyes. :)

It drives me nuts when my bangs are too long. I have never cut it in the parking lot before.

  9. It sounds like you are being proactive when it comes to growing food and stocking up on meat, etc. I am going to try to grow some vegetables, again. I try most years and fail, usually because it gets too hot and the plants get scorched or I don't water enough! But, I have a tomato seedling and some melon seedlings (probably cantaloupe) from seeds I tossed out with some compost, and I have some very old packets of seeds (probably expired, but, maybe some of it might germinate?) The seeds are tomatoes, peppers, squash, and something else that I forget what. It's probably too late, already, to try to grow them, but, I shall try!

    1. Bless,
I grew turnips, potatoes, and a tomato plant from produce thrown out to compost. Try the old seeds since you might get all you need. Try. Put some sticks up and drape material over them to shade them. Yes, try! Good luck.

  10. I've been wearing a mask in the gardens or mowing the yard for years. What you eat the most of should be what you grow if you can.

    1. That will be tomatoes, zucchini, yellow crook-neck squash, and more tomatoes. I will try to can a few quarts of tomatoes even if I have to buy them to can. There are other things I will grow, too.

  11. We'll see if I have luck in the next few weeks when I take my rooted plants outside. I should have started lettuce-maybe still will.

Remember to take them in at night for a few days. Harden them off, don't just let them stay. Start lettuce every few days.
