This article is worth reading every word. It is moderately long, so instead of my writing drivel and you reading it, try reading this instead. We know my beloved Coke does not "cause" Covid19, but the article is interesting on many levels. Interesting?
Okay, I have things to do instead of write.
There are the equivalent of about 9 teaspoons of sugar in a Coke. Most people who drink them rarely ever drink just one per day.
ReplyDeleteIn almost all news stories, they've mentioned the 'comorbidity' or other health related items that cause people to be more susceptible to COVID. Diabetes and pre-diabetes are awful things to have when exposed to COVID.
Alice.
ReplyDeleteAll true. But, I was impressed that the message about poor health is getting to poor and mostly illiterate people in Mexico. I say this as I drink a Coke. I drink no more than one each day and some days I don't have one. It makes me ill to even think of 9 teaspoons of sugar!
Just a quick bit of info: According to UNESCO the adult literacy rate in Mexico as of 2016 was 94.9%.
ReplyDeleteNine teaspoons of sugar in a Coke does sound intensely sweet. The carbonation cuts some of the sweet taste possibly. I drink Diet Rite Zero. It has no sugar, caffeine, or sodium, but I know it is bad for me, because of the artificial sweetener. I like the brand because it seems to keep its fizz longer. Our water here usually tastes pretty good, so I also drink a lot of ice cold tap water. Milk tastes good to me at breakfast. Not almond, oat, or pea milk, I've never seen an almond, oat, or pea with teats. A few times a year I will have decaffeinated hot tea with milk, or decaf coffee with milk. I don't drink any type of alcohol, except for a little glass of champagne on New Years Eve.
I think most people have things they eat or drink that are unhealthy. Some people eat enough that it makes them fat or adds to their risk of diabetes. Some people eat and drink as much of whatever they want and still stay slim.
In my opinion, it sounded like the Mexican politicians are trying to blame the spread of Covid on the people drinking Coca Cola, and getting fat from it, when the politicians have not put effective testing and tracing programs into effect. The article mentioned how there was very little drinkable water in parts of Mexico, so the people drink a lot of Coca Cola. The Jesuit priest was talking about how the Coca Cola was contributing to making the people fat. Maybe that priest could get a message to the Vatican that those cola-drinking people need help getting fresh water in their towns. Maybe the Vatican could then part with just a little bit of their billions of dollars to help get fresh water availability in those areas. I wonder what percentage of the money from the tax put on the Coca Cola went into politicians' pockets.
susie,
DeleteAll good points. The lack of potable water is a factor that causes people to drink Coke.
Thanks for sharing... was very interesting and I sent it along to family that is from Mexico.
ReplyDeleteI drink 8 oz a day and cut back to every other day after going 30 days without. As I have family from Mexico I can tell you they don't have access to food banks. Veggies and fruit are very limited. Food is heavy with CORN which is high sugar. My doctors have all agreed poor nutrition even with those that have the resources to eat healthy along with the chemical preservatives is wrecking our health and allowing illnesses to run rampant
Chef,
DeleteI am always shocked at the amount and types of corn in food! I agree that even people having the money and knowledge to eat healthy food can still wreck their health.
Here in Southern California we can get Mexican Coke in bottles. It is made with cane sugar. I understand that the Mexican Coke that is for sale domestically is very much like the Coke produced here. The US Coke and the not for export Mexican Coke are actually made with high-fructose corn syrup. In the US it is made with a mixture of high fructose corn syrup & glucose.
ReplyDeleteJanet,
ReplyDeleteMexican Coke is much better in my opinion.
