Bounty of Food

Today, we went to Cullman to catch the end of the Farmer's Market. We did and I spent the last of my coupons on $12 tomatoes. They are pretty and large and I know the farmer.

Then, we went into the country to a farmer to buy sweet potatoes. I bought 25 lb. bags for $10 and bought 2 bags--50 lbs. for $20. That makes $0.40/lb. And we love sweet potatoes.

At one store I found turkeys for $0.58/lb. I bought an 11 lb. turkey for $7.03. Blackeyed peas are not going down soon, so I broke out and paid $1.99 for one pound of Camellia brand.

I got one more can of Hormel's Roast Beef and Gravy, and a $0.99 tiny bottle of Dromeday Diced Pimentios, the only ones grown and canned in the US.

Kraft 8oz chunks or grated cheese were $2.50, so I got 12--8 Medium Cheddar Chunks and 4 grated Italian. Three bags of grated cheese are in the freezer.

We went to get my mail and forgot to go to PO!!! Grrr!!!

The day was so overcast or foggy that we could not see the tops of large buildings. But, the clouds cleared away to a cloudless, blue sky. As we came home around 4pm, the clouds were still in Birmingham.

We are both exhausted. Tommy is sitting in the chilly 61F, wiping dirt off the sweet potatoes. I am not sure why I did not ask for washed potatoes.

It is my job to carry in the 50 lbs of potatoes. I got 10 paper grocery bags from the store, and he is wiping them and putting them in bags I can carry, never mind I have to hug them to me.

The turkey is on the counter until I can get a shelf clear enought to put it in the refrigerator.

I am exhausted and I am sure Tommy is tired and cold. Tomorrow, we have to go vacuum the trunk of his car. Ooops, he is here...too dark for him to work.

  1. I could understand getting 5 lbs of potatoes or even 10 lbs at the very good price of 40 cents per pound. What I cannot understand is someone buying 50 lbs of potatoes for 2 people, even if one of those people has a brand new freezer.

    1. rhymes,
We like sweet potatoes! And, we can eat off these for a year. Sorry you are not able to understand. You would probably be really baffled about my buying 160 lbs. one year.

  2. Right now , I can only find Goya pimentos.
We love pimento cheese so I have been buying them.
Great price on the sweet potatoes.

    1. Barbara,
These are not at a mainstream store. I love pimiento and cheese too. But, Tommy hates it, so I don't make as much. Thanks, we think it is a great deal, too. This is what happens when a person goes to the farmer.

  3. I always read that sweet potatoes have a lot of health benefits. My husband and I are big on regular potatoes but don't care for sweet potatoes. I used to get one sweet potato a week for our little dog, it was winter at the time, and I baked it in the oven for him. He always loved it the first day when I would take it out of the oven and would be wig wagging the minute I took it out and put his Tablespoon full on his plate. He really chowed down on it. The rest of the days he didn't want to eat it even if it was warmed up. Then I put a little butter on it and he would eat some, but I think he was liking the butter and not the sweet potato. I only did it that one winter. He gets cooked carrots now, whenever we have them.

We have pretty many things stocked up, I have been trying to figure out where to put stuff. I've got TP pkgs under the bed, and various canned goods stacked on the floor in our dining room, as our small cupboard is full. We need to get another cupboard. I only get enough regular red potatoes to eat for two weeks and I store them in a heavy paper grocery bag in the dining room also. It's starting to look like we are getting ready to start our own little corner market in the dining room. I guess sweet potatoes must not shrivel and sprout like regular potatoes. I don't keep my potatoes in the refrigerator veg bin because my husband and I think it changes their taste. We are too particular about some things I guess.

    1. susie,
That is funny about the dog. I wonder why he only wanted it fresh cooked...lol. We have a set of new shelves for the groceries I have bought. He has two extra bedrooms I use to store all the tp and extra cans. Potatoes are not supposed to be stored in the refrigerator and the sugar forms and it does change the taste. All potatoes are supposed to be kept in paper bags, well, anything that breathes and is not plastic. Burlap is best for storage. And, they should be kept in the dark. Store at no more than 50F. Light and heat will cause regular potatoes to sprout, so if you are comfortable, potatoes will sprout. My house looks like a store, also.

  4. Going to the farmer is the next best thing to growing it yourself. Good deals. Still a lot of work. Yum!

    1. Greg,
This is the only way I buy sweet potatoes because I only want Beauregard, and he grows them. Actually, I don't think they are a lot of work.

  5. Wow, sounds like you got some really good deals. I will have to check out the Dromeday Diced Pimentios. I didn't know they were the only ones grown here and I have been craving some pimento cheese.

You will probably find them in a store that is not the top of the heap. Publix does not carry this brand, but a little tiny store does. I love pimiento and cheese.

I only buy them a year...lol. Tommy is always impressed with the buy when he sees them for more and especially for over $1/lb.

  7. I love sweet potatos and they are very healthy. Years ago we used to buy veggies from the farmers gate which was cheaper and fresher, our monthly farmers markets have just started up again after covid restrictions so it will be nice to get back to the market.

    1. Jan,
These are good and make me feel like I have eaten healthy food. Our market in Cullman never shut down, but most people wore masks.

  9. I like sweet potatoes but if I buy even 10 pounds half of it threatens to go bad on me. I just can't eat that much of it.

  10. Joyful,
I don't think we eat that much, maybe three times each week on heavy weeks. But, some will go bad if it is not stored correctly.

    1. I don't have a good place to store it. I just put it in one of my kitchen cabinets where it is darker and not so hot when the oven is on.

    2. The temperature has to be less than 50F. We have ours stored in the living room below the table holding the TV. They lasted a whole year. Dark is best. Try to find another place to store the sweet potatoes even if it has to be in a place not the kitchen.

    3. Yes but I don't have any other place to store. Otherwise I would stock up on root veggies and onions.

    4. Joyful,
That is why we have them under the table in the living room! That room is coolest of all. I think I might be able to move them into the other bedroom he let me open up. Maybe it will be cool in their this winter.

  11. I love a baked sweet potato. My mother said that her mother would bake them as an after school snack When the children came in on a cold afternoon they were a welcome treat. She said they would peel them and eat them as you would a banana. The boys would put them in their jacket pockets as they went out to do their chores. They made dandy handwarmers.

    John won't eat sweat potatoes.

I haven't slept with Rod Stewart but I do sleep with others. I listen to books on my phone. I set a 30 min timer, turn the volume very very low and I am read to sleep nightly.

I have reheated foods, like fried shrimp in the air fryer but have not cooked meat other than chicken wings in mine. I use the instant pot for several meats. The instant pot is basically an electric pressure cooker. I do still use my stove top pressure cooker for large recipes.

    1. Janet,
When I was a child, I asked Mama for a sweet potato to take outdoors in the cold. She wrapped it in a dish towel and I ate it like a banana, but skin and all. No one ever ate one like that, except me.

John does not know what he is missing!

I guess a book would work, too. I have never tried that.

Right now, the whole air fryer is wonky. It will not go back into the unit! Never used an instant pot.
