Blood All over the Floor

Every time I watch Gunsmoke, someone is usually shot. Of course, no one bleeds much, if at all. But, we know differently. I often wonder how people got the blood out of the wood floors, many of which probably did not have a finish, much less a covering. Sometimes, people are shot in homes and saloons or businesses. How do they live with all this blood and residue and smell? How do they keep the flies away? What happens when someone is bleeding on a rug? Matt Dillon helps pick up bleeding people as do others, yet no one gets blood on their clothing! Yeah, this whole blood thing gets to me every time I see people shot. And, how is it that Matt gets shot in the shoulder/arm so many times and that one shirt he wore for years never has a hole or patch?

Just now, Tommy added that with people coming in right off the street the place must smell awful with horse shit. He has noticed that every time Kitty gets on a stage coach, something happens.

Okay, this is how my mind works. And, my mind has been mulling this over for months. I just had to ask.

My list remains the same, maybe some items added to it. Nothing done! I slept amazingly well last night. I read one chapter in my book, no more, no less, and turn off the light. I don't use reading to put me to sleep. I use reading to clear my mind, I suppose.

The new grocery ads are out with nothing special in the ads. There are many bare shelves in stores I visit. Toilet paper is sparse. Gatorade products are practically nonexistent. But, I never buy those, well, one in last 40 years.

Do you ever wonder about things on film? What is your thought about the way things happen?

Okay, I am going to quit before I lose readers and I am marked off as a nut.

AND, no rains for the next ten days, according to tv. I rejoice!

  1. The grocery ads are NOT that exciting this week.Boo! You are so right about the lack of blood on TV when it comes to shootings. I guess they want to keep it low key so they can keep the show on TV (back in the day). Now they have shows like 48 hours that show actual murder scenes and there is blood everywhere.

    1. Lisa,
It is a problem--shootings and no blood. But, it really must have been a mess. This is the week without good sales each month.

  2. Thank you for mentioning Gatorade. I like to keep a few bottles (maybe 4-6) for when one of us gets sick. I need to stock up on Prego at Kroger too. They have it for $1.50. Not the best price, but currently the lowest around here.

    1. Ms. Goose,
When I saw the 15 feet of shelves, top to bottom with only a few bottles, I looked to see what should be there--Gatorade. I did not want any, but I would have been out of luck. The next day, the same was true at two other stores. I like Prego, too, so will make sure I have plenty. However, I do buy whatever is on sale.

  3. I never thought about the lack of blood on old TV shows. IT is much nicer than what they show today.

    1. Anne,
I do agree that today's bloody shows are much worse. But, I wonder if the lack of blood/consequences caused people not to realize what really happens when someone is shot.

    2. Anne, did you ever notice how all the good guys wore white and all the bad guys wore black too?

  4. I haven’t look at the grocery ads yet, I am a day behind, so I need to get busy. I hadn’t thought about the blood before. I’m sure they had a lot of stained floors back then though.

Think of the smell and flies drawn to the blood. Yuck!

    2. I am pretty sure a woman with a scrub bucket and lye soap was expected to clean up after the men's bloody foolishness. It was ever thus...

    3. Sue,
Of course, I forgot! NOT! Women lived such hard and subservient lives then. They had babies and the men shot their sons in battle or gun fights.

  5. My thoughts on Gunsmoke and other westerns are how did they drink from dirty streams and ponds and never get sick. Immune systems must have been better back then. Their teeth almost always look straight and white, too.

    1. Unknown,
They probably did not live as long as we do. Plus, the lushes drank enough alcohol, maybe they kept well that way. They do have nice, white teeth.

    2. Unknown,

They had nice teeth because processed foods, sugar, and high fructose corn syrup were not yet a major part of the American diet.

    3. My grandmother, born in 1894, had most of her teeth almost 80 years later. She died in 1960s and probably did not have sweets she did not bake. I remember so many times when she chewed a little stick and used that on all her teeth, inner and outer surfaces. It works.

  6. How can you be expected to get anything done when you have such important things to ponder as why Matt Dillon didn’t bleed and how Miss Kitty smells when she gets on a stagecoach? You get a pass from me. People can be so unfair.

    1. rhymes,
I never ponder why kitty smells. I ponder how all that blood on the floor smells and draws flies.

  7. Haha! well, now every time I watch a show like that I'm going to think those things ;)`

It is something to ponder while your kitten crawls on you.

  8. I chalk anything up on tv or film as pure fiction, so while I might think, that's pretty lame, I let it go after that initial thought.

    1. Kim,
After smelling the blood from a piece of meat the next day, I don't even want to imagine how a lot of blood smells. I would retch. The next day without a thorough cleaning would be horrid. Thanks for that confirmation.

  10. Yes I do.
I like sci-fi but I never lose sight of the physics or how on earth does THAT work.
I recall Gunsmoke enough to say it looked liked the 70s not the west.

I think sci-fi is amusing. I am amused that all the hairstyles are the styles of the day.

  11. I often notice things in TV shows or movies that couldn't have possibly worked that way. Most recently, a scene in the Netflix series Virgin River - the main character eats a piece of sushi. She puts it in her mouth and then approximately 3 seconds later is having a conversation. Um... did she swallow it whole?

Obviously, someone gave her time to chew. I catch those things, too.

My response above sounded snippy, not at all like I meant to sound. Tommy has the mistakes memorized.

    3. I didn't take it as snippy.

Once you have seen those kinds of things, I think it becomes easier to notice going forward.

Good. I reread it and it sounded smarty pants.
