When I made soup, I wanted Hunts Petite Diced Tomatoes in it instead of just tomato sauce. I found it at the Big Box for $0.98 a can. The soup was great. But, I had a nagging feeling. Did I have enough tomato sauce or diced tomatoes? Would the price rise significantly in the near future? Ah, the agony of deciding!
I checked on Amazon and found the product a bit more expensive. I waffled about what to do. After all, a couple of dollars more is not bad. Finally, today, I had Tommy take the gift cards I had from returning items and buy 12 cans of petite diced tomatoes. There was no electric cart available for me to shop. Oh, I took the label off the one can I had so he could more easily shop.
Now, at least I have enough for six pots of soup at the present price. The price will NOT go down. The price at Publix is nearer $2. I read that Hunt's prices would rise.
Of course, your fresh-canned tomatoes would be superior!
My hand is improving every day. I do practically nothing. Monday, I even asked the doctor to open my water bottle.
Tuesday was 68F. The sky was clear of clouds with a slight, warm breeze. Thursday there is a possibility of tornadoes. There will be high winds and rain, at the least. I am not looking forward to Thursday. We will stay home, stay in all day!
Dinner: Wahlburger patty, choice of cooked cabbage, slaw, carrots, turnip greens. Tommy had slaw and a lot of shredded carrots with his hamburger. I had slaw and carrots and cooked cabbage with my plain patty.
Wednesday:
I was in Publix where Hunt's products are bogo. The diced, petite tomatoes I bought are bogo and save $1.47. So, the 12 cans are a bargain.
Green beans at a store in Cullman have been $0.69 for a can. So, I bought four more cans.
We just came home and I am tired! I will tell you about the day tomorrow. How is your day going? We have had two weeks, at least of dry, pretty, very warm days. Now, it will storm tomorrow.
I am ready to plant things! How about you?
You are so right no prices will go down. Now is the time to stock up on what you use.
ReplyDeleteCheryl,
DeletePrices have risen drastically on a few things I use, so I figure this will happen to everything shortly.
I am a big fan of the flavor of Hunt's Stewed Tomatoes.Sometimes I cook with them just a they come out of the can. Sometimes I chop them up a little, but most of the time I like to use the immersion blender to use them in tomato sauce I make for various dishes. They taste so good to me. Fuzzy used to beg and beg for pieces of Hunt's stewed tomatoes, and he would eat the small pieces I would give him
ReplyDeletewith gusto. I am afraid to give any to him anymore with his
liver failing, because they are seasoned with a little onion flavor.and theysaythat is dangerous for dogs. I am careful not to let him see me open them and I use the immersion blender on them before he can see the tomato hunks. It always makes me feel guilty because he likes them so much.
My day was good in the fact that I was able to begin the process of fixing my back molar with the giant cavity that suddenly was exposed when a piece of my tooth broke off. Thankfully it did not abscess or start hurting me before I was able to get it worked on. It has been since October that the cavity appeared, but it was quite a while after my eye surgery until I could get dental work done.
I went into debt to get a crown for that tooth. After being in the dentist chair for about an hour, I was worn out, I can't seem to get calm in a dentist chair and my muscles stay tense the whole time I am there, so half my mouth was numb for about 2 1/2 hours after the visit. I had made taco meat for tacos the day before that, and my husband ate dinner while I slept.
I will have one more visit in early March to get the permanent crown put on. After spending that much money on my crown I should feel like royalty. Well at least I am lucky that the tooth never started causing me a lot of pain. So that is how my day was.
Stewed tomatoes my mother made was one of my least favorite dishes, but I ate it. So, I don't want to try Hunt's Stewed Tomatoes. I might buy one can to try and see what it tastes like. We just ate a bowl of stewed tomatoes. Maybe this is different than the commercial cans.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if your dog can eat tomatoes without the onion. I never heard of a dog liking tomatoes.
You definitely are lucky you have had no abcess or pain with that tooth. I certainly don't relax at the dentist! I am so terrified at the dentist that I won't move, so stay in a state of tension all over. I won't even go for the rest of the implant procedure until I have stents put in my heart/arteries. There is no use having a heart attack in the dentist chair from the stress. I know you will be glad when this is all done.
Tomato sauce and diced tomatoes are so different. I feel that tomato sauce is over-cooked, over-processed, and bland. I find diced tomatoes fresher and lighter. I don't like to use tomato sauce unless it's for a past sauce, which simmers forever.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that you can make tomato sauce out of tomato paste? Take 1 can of tomato paste and add a can full of water to it, mix, and voila--you have tomato sauce. Tomato paste takes up less space in the pantry.
