Mass Timber

This building trend sort of bothers me. Read to see what you think.

I accidentally ate jalapeno, so just trying to survive! Feeling really ill.

Are you a jalapeno eater?

    1. Texas,
Thanks, I will do that right now. It may be too late for my throat.

  2. I love jalapenos ON things. Can't eat alone - but love it as a topping.

    1. Cheryl,
I cannot eat jalapenos at all. Why did I do that?

    1. ming,
Exactly! That made me laugh. It certainly does not inspire confidence in the structure.

  4. I can't eat jalapenos or other hot peppers because they give the insides of my mouth what look like hives, and the same red marks on my tongue and then the burning and irritation take a couple of days to go away, and that is with taking benadryl, because I thought it was an allergy. I can eat stuffed poblano chiles unless some how they are hot ones. Maybe I can eat them because of the cheese that they are stuffed with, but the melty cheese stuffed poblano is normally a pepper that I can eat and not get "burning hives" on my tongue and inside of my cheeks.

Wow, I don't know what to think of that type of engineered wood being used for taller buildings. What is wrong with Concrete, Brick, steel reinforced buildings. I wonder if they could grow enough wood to replace the amount of compressed, layers of wood it would take for tall buildings everywhere.

I wonder what my Dad would think of building tall buildings with that type of wood. It would make more work for carpenters, I imagine, but what about all of the chemicals they use to bond and then pressurize the wood so it would withstand wind and weather, and fire. How good could the production of that type of wood beams be for the environment.

I sure would like to ask my Dad what he thought about that type of building. He was a Union carpenter, carpenter foreman, and then supervisor for 45 years. He took vacation two times during those years. and only a very few times off sick. He was also a master woodworker. He built two different cabin cruisers during my childhood. The second one was all wood, covered with fibreglass, except for the rails at the top of the boat to hold on to when walking out of the boat to get to the bow, and that was marine varnished mahogany. Dad knew how to bend the plywood to shape it into the bow of a boat.

I so often wish I could call him and ask him about or tell him about different things, but it would be a really, really long distance call, as he passed away almost 3 years ago. I sure do miss him.

    Enjoy your day today.

    1. susie,
When I ate these in a cheesy mixture, I did not know they were there at all. I hurt a lot, but at least I did not have hives like you do.
Thanks for the pithy critique of the building material. The wood came from Austria. I wonder how they feel about deforestation. How long will it be before they come for our wood or more wood from rainforests?
That is interesting about your father's skills. He sounds like he must have done like my father, worked on things for himself on his off times. I want to ask both my parents things all the time. Mine have been dead for over 30 years. I wish I had asked more questions, but I did not have the questions when they were alive. sigh

    2. I used to always be calling my Dad about guy type of things, and my Mom about what mothering, and cooking things and what she thought I should do about whatever was going on with my daughter when she was a baby. Mom knew our baby son's adoption had gone through and that he would arrive in the USA from South Korea in June, and that our son was going to be named after my Dad. Unfortunately, Mom died six months before our son arrived home.
Dad knew about all sorts electrical/electrician things because he had studied it in the Marine Corp before he worked on the electrical systems of planes and jets. One time the lights in our house were dimming and going brighter on one side only of our house and not the other. It was like a ghost movie. I called our electric utility company and the guy came and looked around outside, and then told us the problem wasn't on the lines outside, but inside our house. I called and I asked my Dad if he thought we should call an electrician out. He said, No, that problem was outside on the line, probably a limb some where was shorting out the electric on the wire when it touched it. He explained it a lot better than that, but that's what I remember now. He told me to call the Electric company back and have someone else check the problem, and then I explained all that my Dad had told me, and they did send someone to check it again. Sure enough, the problem was just what Dad said it was and there was nothing at all wrong with our wiring inside the house. How much money we would have wasted by just calling an electrician out to check our house wiring. Whoever that first electric company worker was either should have known better or they were just lazy.
I guess most of us miss being able to talk to our parents and grandparents after it is too late to even call them.

    3. susie,
Daddy was the same way with all type guy things. And, I called my mother for the mothering and cooking things. I have had to mostly take care of guy things myself, the calling and explaining since my ex knew zilch about those things.
