2nd & Charles

Going from the podiatrist to the SAS store, we passed 2nd & Charles. I immediately recognized the name even though I have never been there. CLICK HERE I have about 100 books to sell if they will buy them at all. No, these are not the ones my friend mailed to me. Tommy has every electronic he has bought for the last fifty years. He told me to drop them in the trash because they are old and no one will want them. He is so naive about stuff like this.

He told me the other day and the week and month before that he wishes I would get rid of some of these books lying around. Well, books don't look like clutter to me at all. However, some of these do need to go since I have no bookcase. He is not pushing at all, just casually mentions the matter.

When I told him I wanted to go there when we finished at SAS, he said okay and then wanted to take me back. I was just too exhausted when we finished going to the doctor and buying shoes. Both were high-stress occasions.

Have you ever been to 2nd & Charles? Sold anything to the business?

I have tasked myself with helping my friend who worked at the daycare. I will get food for her, give her toiletries if she wants, the extra shampoos and such that I have stocked. Toothpaste? If she will use what I have, she can have it. If she needs something special that I don't have, well, maybe she can afford it if I save her money on other items. She is not picky about shampoo or bar soap, so that helps.

She is still nauseated, and her nose hurts as does her head. I think her nose is broken. I have not seen her forehead that is bandaged over the stitches. But, the damage to her nose and cheeks and eyes is much less evident.

The hall light is blown. We really need someone to change light bulbs. I don't dare try to get on a ladder! Since I cannot easily even step up a 5-inch step, I doubt I can.

It is late Saturday night and I must get something out of the house to declutter. Okay, I found a small aluminum pot, caked with something and battered. It is in the sink to catch grease we drain. I cooked a pound of bacon. Then, it will go into the kitchen trash. And, an old Utilitech flashlight that is corroded inside has been tossed. Those things will have to do unless I poke around in the box they were in.

The day was lovely and mild, 75F. Best of all, the humidity is still in 30 % or so. Until 4 pm there were no clouds. I cannot say for sure after that.

What is your experience with 2nd & Charles? How is your decluttering coming along?

  1. I must have missed something here. If you friend was hurt so badly that she required medical care, stiches she should go back to that facility for follow up care. If the daycare sent her there already they have acknowledged that she was hurt while on the job, They have accepted this as a worker's comp injury. Any follow up care needed should also be covered by the daycare's insurance. Explain this to her and make sure she goes back in for a further, more thorough examination of her injuries. She may have a broken nose or head injury if it was not checked when she first went in.

As to you, don't you dare get up on a ladder to change a lightbulb.
If necessary call your local fire department and ask if they can come help. This is also the time to change batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. If you do not have them many cities provide them at no charge to the elderly.

    1. They insisted on taking her to a place that cares for workman's comp patients and she had them take her to her own doctor. They did. She is screwing up her whole case in order not to cause trouble for the daycare that seems intent on firing all the white employees, and she is the last. The one before her was let go because she got sick. It is a pattern she has seen before at this place. I keep telling her she needs more care.

Tommy refuses to get a smoke detector. I called and this city does not provide smoke detectors. I probably need to ask again.

  2. Linda, you know better than that. I know you are on a limited income. I also know you lost a friend do to a fire. You home was destroyed because you could not get the roof fixed through no fault of your own. These situations can be prevented and there should be resources available, drive down to the local fire station, explain your situation, if the city does not provide it, the county may, if they do not the fire department may know who to contact. If still you can't find help, start your own savings jar. Put every piece of change, or every dollar you get in change into that jar. You will have enough money to get least one detector before you know it. Put it up outside of your bedroom door. Place a small knife on your window sill. If there is a fire you can at least cut the screen to be able to get out of the house. Next, save the change to get one small fire extinguisher for the kitchen, If you think you could not work it or remember you have it, then just place a large container of flour in the cooking area. If you have a kitchen fire on the stove, throw that on the fire. Never throw water on a grease fire. Everyone can panic in an emergency but when you have things right there it is easier to remember what to do.

    1. Texas,
You do realize he resists anything I do or suggest? When I said I would buy a smoke detector, he said he would not allow one in the house that he would make me leave it outside. Well, I think he is coming closer to relenting. There would be hell to pay if I did get the fire department in here.
I can work a fire extinguisher. Yes, I know about not putting water on a grease fire.
My house burned when I was four, and I watched it. So, I am terrified of starting a fire.

  3. Whaaaa? Tommy refuses to engage in a common-sense activity (getting a smoke detector)?!? That is SO unlike him!

    [insert rolling eyes here]

I enjoy the Tommy's "Assinine Behavior of the Day" feature of this blog so much, Linda. But I need to know why he refuses to get a smoke detector. Or does Tommy never need a reason to be ridiculous? ;^) ;^)

Anyway, I'm sure you'll run your usual end game around him, and get one for your safety and peace of mind. But get one that is a combo smoke alarm/carbon monoxide detector. You need both; may as well combine them in one unit.

    1. You know he never needs a reason beyond "this is my house and you cannot tell me what to do." I sat here for over a year with his stack of dishes he refused to allow me to wash. Now, he even washes dishes and helps load and unload the dishwasher. Oh, he says he has had the radon checked, so we don't need one of those, either.

I am glad you enjoy his antics! I could write a book! I suppose I have.

  4. PS: My decluttering of DD's room is coming along swimmingly! I have pulled another bag of clothes out of her closet to donate, and have recycled boxes and such, did some vacuuming and Swiffering, and am ready to wash windows and hang new curtains (she took the old ones, which she loved).

My biggest accomlishment is clearing all clutter off my kitchen table. It had a lot of old paperwork and "what the hell am I going to do with this??" crap on it. So I discarded, recycled, and donated and now it is beautifully clean and clear and has a lovely fall arrangement on it. It's been this way for 3 days. And no one has eaten at it! I've been amusing myself by sending DD pictures of the table at odd times. Just to prove that it's still clear. I'm waiting for the day she texts me and says, "MOM!!! STOP with the pix of the damn table already!!" Hasn't happened yet, though. :^) :^)

    1. Sue,
It sounds like you are enjoying all this progress in her room. Great job.

That is funny about the table and all the pictures. At least you have a record of what you have done and how long it is lasting.

I got two items out of the house/in the trash can in the kitchen. And, Tommy told me to toss those two items.

    2. Always nice to have Tommy's approval! It means our favorite grouch is learning and growing! LOL!!

Progress is best made by inches, so good on you! And it always feels awesome, doesn't it?

He is slow to be so smart. It does feel good to get things done.

  5. If she got stitches (which I didn't realize) she needs to go back. It is great she is trying to be nice - this is just ridiculous. Maybe there is a bigger issue with her.
I have never heard of that store.
I do believe ALL fire departments provide smoke detectors for free. You need to get one - it could mean life or death.

    1. Just an added note. Tommy doesn't need to know. You can buy one, insert battery and place on a shelf in your closet or on top of something - peace of mind!

    2. Cheryl,
She has a copay she is trying to avoid. She is spending money to try and "not cause trouble" in an attempt to keep this job. This fire dept does not, but there is an issue with the fire dept that I need to work around. When I called, I had gotten sick and had to abandon thinking about this smoke detector problem I was trying to solve.

lol you know I am not above sneaking!

    4. I like Cheryl's idea very much! But put the detector up high out in the open, either in your kitchen or by the furnace (boiler), or somewhere between the two. Those areas are your primary sources of fire and/or carbon monoxide.

    5. Sue,
Up high is not possible for either of us to do. I will put it as high as I can which is higher than Tommy can reach. I really would like several here.

  6. My Friend, Do as you like with any of those books. Sell, donate, or give them away. What ever you choose to do is just fine!

    1. Janet,
I am reading them. I tried giving them away, but the one thrift store does not take books. Okay! I will read and then try to sell, and find a laundry and put there for the taking.

  7. I have used 2nd and Charles. You can take books (they have a limit per day that you can take) They do not give you money right away. They process and assign a value per book (some have no value) then, at a later date you can go and claim your money, use it as a store credit, or convert it into a gift card.

    1. Anne,
Thanks. At the bookstore in Cullman, they could evaluate books the same day, but they are smaller. Lots of mine had no value. Some of the ones with no value were classics, so surprising. I read on their site that there was a limit of three of their containers which looked large.
