Yes!

I have been saying we need a freezer, I need a freezer, what am I going to do with all this food...things like that. Tommy has not said a word. No reply.

Just now, I said, "Can I buy a freezer and keep it in your house until I move it from here?" He said, "Yes, if you pay for it!" I will.

I found one that is about 21" deep and 24" wide. Or, those numbers are reversed. And, it is 5'5". I don't think the shelves are adjustable. I don't even know if one could be removed. Then, there is the tiny chest freezer that will be a problem. So, I don't know.

What I do know is that I will want a freezer, no matter where I live.  I had a cheap one, and this one will be even cheaper. So, it looks like the stimulus check will be spent partially on a freezer. The ones I have seen are just over $200. Now, if I had someone to bring it to me to save on delivery fees.

So, now to shop seriously! Does anyone have knowledge of a freezer I should avoid or a recommendation of a freezer that is great?

This evening, we packed and loaded a box full of food we know that at this point we cannot eat or freeze and Tommy rolled it over to the neighbor's house. We do not want to throw it out.

  1. Freezers are great! It is so nice that you have one now. I cooked up sweet potatoes today and froze them in meal size dishes. Then I will thaw and heat a dish when we want to have it. What kind of food did you give away? You seem to be a healthy eater so I am wondering.

  2. Ann,
I have not gotten the freezer yet. I had a freezer for about 15 years and loved it. I have away about 5 lbs russet potatoes, 3 lbs of Red Delicious apples, squash, zucchini, dozen oranges, radishes. Believe me, I have an abundance left. If I had a freezer here right now, I would not have given any away. I would have cooked and frozen it. What kind of potato dish did you freeze?

  3. I recently purchased a Midea compact upright freezer on Amazon and love it. I checked the prices tonight and it is now over $400. I only paid $210 about 4 weeks ago. Maybe if you wait a little the price will drop again.

  4. I cooked and mashed the sweet potatoes and added a little brown sugar and butter and froze them in little glass dishes. Hope you get that freezer soon!

    1. Ann,
Thanks. I love sweet potatoes. I buy a variety that does not need butter or sugar, so I save that effort and calories. I have been buying glass storage dishes since all my Tupperware is gone. Also, I 4 oz and 2 oz Ball canning jars that can go into the freezer. I am getting excited about getting a freezer.

  5. The small chest freezers are deep and you will need to put something in the bottom (plastic basket) to hoist things up. The upside is defrosting them. You can, empty it, turn it off roll the drain hole over the edge of an outdoor doorway, unplug it and have it defrosted in a couple of hours.
I have an upright which is not frost free. They are better for longer storage because the temperature is constant and never heats at all to defrost. My shelves are not moveable but there is much space between them so I can freeze large items. They down side? They are a pain in the butt to defrost and you have to pay attention the cooling wires under the shelves.. (Natural defrost, no hacking with an instrument though I use a hair dryer and a bucket and can get the whole thing washed and dried in about 3 hours. Unlike the chest freezer even though the time is the same, the chest unit is passive defrosting. The upright means working continually as fast as I can)

    1. Anne,
I had a frost-free. I liked it and it was cheap. Mama had a huge upright freezer we defrosted with a box fan or two. I think I remember we put a couple of dish pans in it. Mama had to have the upright because of her back. Now, I have to have an upright for the same reason. I think I will get a 3.0 cu ft size since it is a bit over $200. Maybe I will get a bigger one if it is not too expensive. I am still up in the air as to particulars. Thanks for information.

  6. I would do a small up right due to your health issues. Call a repair shop you trust and ask what ones to avoid or that are easier to repair. That is what we did.

    1. Chef,
My back will not take bending and lifting that a chest would require. Tommy might be able to bend a bit and lift a lot. But, I want to make this easy on him, too. I have only had one person out in the past 20+ years, and then the refrigerator was only unplugged! I might call him. I know no one down here. Thanks.

  7. Lowes delivered our freezer for free, but I think had to spend like $299 or more. I can't remember for sure. But they set it up right where we wanted it and plugged it in.

  8. I have a chest freezer but I would go with an upright freezer if I was buying one now. Its so good to be able to freeze meals ahead of time, or buy up when something is on special.

I do cook ahead, but not storing as whole meals. And, I love a good special.

  9. I’m agreeing with the other commenters. Chest freezers are for the young and agile. They are so hard to keep organized and get things out of.
Uprights are the best way to go in my opinion.
Also newer freezers use much less energy than freezers 15-20 years old too. We had a quite old upright freezer, when we got rid of our electric bill dropped by $20 a month

  10. Whatever you decide on, it may be a while before you can actually take possession of it. We ordered one at the end of March, and were told at that time it would come in early May. That has now been pushed to July. I've heard from others having the same experience. Don't know if it's maybe because they're waiting for parts from China or something?

That is what I hear. Lowe's will not even take an order for one.

  11. Linda, Have you considered looking on Craigslist or Marketplace? I just checked Craig's list in my area and found one of those low freezers for $49.Hopefully you can find an upright one.
