Holiday Food Costs--Going Up?

This is not true. Well, not in my opinion. Note that the ten shoppers did not look for specials. These facts may hold true for some people, but not for most people. Well, this is my opinion.  It is eyeopening.

  1. The prices have definitely gone up here. They have been increasing every few months by a big amount. Now they might increase even more substantially just in time for the holidays due to container shops off the coast of California and BC. A few weeks ago skne of these shops caught fire exacerbating the problem. Then we had major storms over the weekend resulting in major flooding, landslides, mudslides and highway infrastructure being greatly damaged. It means goods can't move or are delayed and all of that leads to greater costs.

    1. Joyful,
It has been my experience that some prices are the same and others have barely increased. But, I do not doubt your experience. I also saw how the study was formed. No one looked for bargains, which I do. Of course, the holidays are yet to come, so I suppose we will see.

    2. Wherever I wrote 'shops' it should say 'ships' as in container ships. I think the study was not well planned but I have no doubt prices have gone up in USA also. Perhaps not where you live which is a good thingvfor those that live there and hopefully price increases do not not reach there. Have a great week.

    3. Joyful,
I knew you meant ships. I guess we will have to wait to see how bad it gets and where it strikes.

    1. Joe,
Thanks. My milk is the same as it has been for several years--$4.59 for a half gallon. But, you cannot rely on my milk prices as a measure. Gas is higher, but not extremely so. I just make it a habit not to buy things except for when they are on sale or bogo. I cannot afford to pay regular prices! Thanks. I only know prices in a small area of the country.

  3. Some costs here are actually going down. I have been reading about %5 and even $8 gallons of gasoline in California. Here it had been as high as $3.35 but has now settled back to $3.05 -- I buy our groceries at Kroger so usually have spent enough each month to get 20 cents or 30 cents per gallon discount at their gas pumps.

The only shortages I have run into at the grocerty store have been sandwich bags (I use them as pooper-scoopers for our dog's backyard visits) and hearts of romaine. Myrs. RWP loves mandarin oranges slash cuties slash haloes slash whatever they are called and those are sometimes in short supply too. For a while the tuna fish section was empty, now that I think about it. I really don't notice the presence or absence of things I am not shopping for. Paper towels and bathroom tissue are now in abundant supply; keep your fingers crossed.

A fairly sizeable crowd will be eating at our oldest son's home on Thanksgiving and as of yesterday he had not been out to buy the turkey and ham yet. I encouraged him not to wait until the last minute or he may get a surprise.

    1. rhymes,
Those CA prices are definitely exorbitant. I think We have paid as high as $3.10 several times. I wish I lived near a Kroger!

TP is still sketchy. While I still only buy at bogo, the shelves are not yet full of paper goods. And, the halos are stacked high. I have specifically noticed them as I have shopped the last few weeks. Plastic freezer bags, pint, were impossible to find but are now back in stock.

I see stacks of ham and turkey, turkey breasts, and all sorts of precooked turkey breasts here.

      Snack crackers are sketchy.

  4. Prices of just about everything have increased, but it varies by state and depends on where you shop. I found 2lbs fresh cranberries at Sams $2.38. I bought 2 bags. We don't eat turkey, but the price of all other Thanksgiving food items were pretty much the same as last year. Our milk and egg prices have doubled though. All other meat prices have soared too.

    1. Ms Goose,
Thanks. It is obvious you are correct if these comments mean anything. I found one-pound bags of cranberries $5/3--$1.67/lb. I bought 3. There are no cheap eggs, so I pay the price! There are still sales on meat, thank goodness.

  5. It's a dumb article designed to scare people shitless, nothing else. I detest alarmist soft news. It does so much more harm than good.

And the senior director of institution credit at AgAmerica Lending has zero credibility as far as I am concerned. Why should I believe this person about anything, let alone MY Thanksgiving dinner? Pish tosh--I doubt the man has shopped for a single meal in his life, let along a Thanksgiving dinner. Blow your "news" out yer ear, buddy!

    1. Sue,
It did seem like a rather alarmist article to me. Thanks. Don't hold back next time.

  6. Umm, just so there's no mistake, that "blow your news out yer ear, buddy!" was in reference to the senior director, not to you, Linda!!
I had a pretty cranky day today, and it manifests in sarcasm. I shouldn't have whooped it up on your blog. Please accept my apologies.

    1. Sue,
Okay, this comment made me laugh as I did not in the least think you were talking to me. Feel free to whoop it up on my blog anytime you like. I certainly took no offense. Maybe I am dense.

  7. I haven't looked to see if prices have gone up.
I buy what I intend to buy.

  8. I must say prices here have increased. I am like you, I watch the sales weekly, I stock up when prices are at the lowest. I fill the freezer with meat and dairy. Cheese freezes well so I stock up that as well. I get canned goods at the best price around the start of winter and holidays. I get chicken and beef broth, canned soups at rock bottom prices. I may buy enough for a year's supply. I also will stock up on cereals, crackers, pasta, rice, beans, chips. I always make sure to have plenty of flour, sugars, salt, pepper, spices, yeast, butter etc. If we keep good freezer and pantry we can go into the kitchen and make a meal. I did a lot of this before the pandemic but have enlarged it now. I do not have any worries if we have another shut down, I have even started to stock pile dog food for my furbabies. I know you understand, you have lived alone and made sure you were prepared for storms, illness etc..

    1. Today, I bought food full price. I hated that! I bought confectioner's sugar and dark brown sugar, ground ginger, and ground cloves. And, I used all them tonight. You sound as stocked as I am, though I don't stock crackers or chips, but do on pasta. Tommy is sort of fascinated with all the food, although he did see it at my house. I just worry because we don't have a generator to run the freezer and refrigerator. AND, we have no way to cook at all. I had an electric grill outdoors, at least.
