Blackeyed peas, Explained.

If you are not familiar with the Southern Tradition of eating blackeyed  peas on New Year's Day for luck in the upcoming year, the explanations in Mental Floss will be interesting.

We will never have a full meal  for Christmas since I am barely up to getting out of bed! Since I just got up from a nap, I will try to load the dishwasher with the usual help from Tommy.

For brunch, I had half a banana and I think I had milk. Who knows? At almost 5 pm, I had a plain turkey sandwich with Miracle Whip.  Tommy can eat anything he can find.

Yesterday, I threw out a bottle of MW that was getting too spicy. Today, I opened a new bottle and it was sweet and creamy. YUM! There was not much left in the bottle I threw out. I over bought last summer. Oh, well, still saved money.

Sitting right here in the living room, you will find me sorting blackeyed peas. Of course, I will do it dry and then rinse the beans later. The crock pot cooks them perfectly. I don't mind if they get a bit mushy. I wish I had some chow chow. I might eat them plain or with some catsup.

Do you eat blackeyed peas? With Chow chow? Catsup? What?

Happy New Year!

  1. I am not southern, but have had black eyed peas every year of my life on NY day. Also have corned beef and cabbage - every year - never fail. Day 2 will be Rueban sandwich.
    Happy New Year.

  2. Thanks for sharing that article, I'd heard of people eating black eyed peas for good luck but never knew why! That was quite interesting! I like how they explained what the sides are for - the greens are for money & the cornbread is for gold! If I knew how to make them & had supplies on hand, I might make some tomorrow. Maybe next year!
So tell me, what is chow chow? That's another thing I've read about on your blog that I never heard of! Love learning about foods that are new to me!
We're grilling up some burgers on our new flat top griddle we got for Christmas and lighting some fireworks over here to celebrate :)
Wishing you & Tommy a very Happy New Year!!

    1. Bri,
Chow is pickled relish. I cannot eat the hot type.
The new griddle and burgers sounds so good to me. I am hungry! It is about 6 pm, and I am surprised fireworks are not out yet.
      Happy New Year!

  3. Well, I tried to find black-eyed peas yesterday when grocery shopping, but none of the stores had canned or dried. I forgot to look for frozen. I just don't think there's much of a market for them here in the Northeast. I guess my luck will just have to depend on the beef stew I'm making for dinner today!

Do you leave 3 peas on your plate for luck, fortune, & romance? Also, I did not know that Hoppin' John served the day after New Year's is called "Skippin' Jenny"!

I do learn some interesting facts on your blog!
    Happy New Year to all!

    1. Sue,
No, I don't leave three peas on my plate. Maybe that is my problem...lol.

  4. PS: This looks like a good recipe! I might have to order some black-eyed peas from *m*zon to try it out.

    1. Sue,
This does not look like a good recipe to me. Blackeyed peas are simple to cook...just sort and boil. I suppose that people in Wyoming like something fancy.

    2. Hmm. I did think the rice part was too fussy. I would sautee the cooked rice/butter in a skillet instead of constantly bending over a hot oven door, but that's just me, being a smart old cook instead of a dumb young one.

But overall, I thought the extra flavors sounded delicious!

I'd love to hear how your cook your peas. In water? Stock? How much? How long?

    3. Sue,
If you look on the bag of blackeyed peas, there are instructions. But, I cover them with water and cook until done. I have had peas cook in less than an hour and some take several hours. In the crockpot, I put them in and check on them about 3 hours later. Then, I eat them...lol.

  5. Although my family was from the south I don't remember eating blackeyed peas at new year.

Personally I don't care for them very much. Well, let me clarify, I don't care for the dried ones ...I rate them right up there with dried lima beans. I adore fresh limas and also really like crowder peas. I think crowder peas taste similar to blackeyes in that they have a slightly "dusty" taste. (to me)

I made Pozole which is a Mexican pork and hominy stew. The hominy used is a Mexican variety that tastes quite different than the American version. The Mexican hominy is the corn that corn tortillas and tamales are made from. Each person adds a variety of condiments to their own bowl like diced onions, sliced radishes, shredded or chopped cabbage and a squeeze or two of lime. Other items can be added but the above mentioned ones are the classics. I like to add chopped avocado while others will add diced tomatoes or a spoon of salsa. It is a very filling dish.

I actually made the soup yesterday but after messing with it nearly all day I was not wanting to eat any. This has also happened to me when making other large meals ....like thanksgiving for 25-30 people. You can only do so much tasting for seasonings before your taste buds have had enough.

Happy New Year to You and Tommy!

    1. Janet,
I cannot imagine being from the South in past years and not eating blackeyed peas! Maybe your mother did not like them. Well, I love Fresh limas, but I have never cooked dried ones. I have some here that I should probably cook.

The Mexican meal sounds good. I do not like hominy, but maybe the Mexican hominy is better than what I have had.

So true, who can reliably taste after a while.

Happy New Year to you and John!
