Forgotten Christmas Decoration, Tommy's Sandwich Creations

Thursday night, we watched Coat of Many Colors, a story about Dolly Parton. There was not a bit of Christmas in it, but I suppose it was shown as a holiday special.

The boneless turkey breast was delicious. We each had a meal from it. I imagine we will have at least two more meals each from it. Tommy added cranberry sauce I made to his plate. Friday night, we will have turkey breast, carrots and cole slaw. Tommy might want cranberry sauce again.

For years I have wanted a life-size, cardboard, Coca Cola Santa. I have been obsessed. Last year, after Christmas I finally acquired one. I was going to bring it here and use it, but I forgot about my plan. But, it won't go to waste. Next year! I also wanted my 3-4 ft. Santa blow mold, too. But, it is in the back of my storage unit and not as easily found. We had several one-foot-tall Santa and Snowmen. I gave those to my grown children. Those are about 40- and 50-years-old. I love blow molds.

Because of a crowded freezer, I took out some bread. Of course, we try to eat it instead of throwing it out. I told him there was pita bread to eat. I had some salami that I cannot eat, given to us on a charcuterie board and some white cheddar that was dried from being frozen. He came in and showed me his "pita sandwich." Inside the pita bread, he had salami and white cheddar cheese, and he had microwaved it all. He put mustard on it and seemed really happy about his lunch.  I provide "stuff" and he becomes creative. It's cute.

I also make sure there is lettuce of some sort and tomatoes. He helps himself for lunch and sometimes adds things to his dinner. Of course, sometimes I do make a sandwich for him, but rarely. We eat lunch at different time.

Since I only managed to sleep six hours on Thursday night, I am already drooping at noon.

Yesterday, I saw a sign that said $2.09 under the cartons of 18 eggs. I whipped around and went back. No, the sign was for a dozen eggs. No way! Eggs prices are the one thing that I have seen that are causing me alarm.  It sort of triggers my alarms. So, today, I found the last carton of 18 eggs and paid $4.29. It is okay since I want eggs! I will forego some egg eating and shop better. Some are boiling right now.

On Friday in Cullman, we saw gas for $2.82/gal. Of course, Tommy had filled up for $2.88!

By the way, my Pfaltzgraff dishes, four-place setting. 16 pieces in total, only cost me $53. I opened my savings "bank" and had only to put a bit more with the savings to buy the dishes. I had not spent my bank money from last year, so this was sort of "free" money and dishes since that paid for the rest of the dishes. The dishes were free as far as it coming out of my pocket right now.

These were ordered from Walmart.com and they are made in China. They are not supposed to be good quality, but they look fine to me. Since I have never seen the originals, I suppose I am ignorant of what I am missing.

Someone is supposed to come on Sunday to help me get stuff out of the living room.

Do you own a life-sized Coca Cola Santa? What is the price of eggs where you live/shop?  So, it's the weekend. What are your plans?

  1. That is a crazy price for eggs! I just paid $4.36 like that for 2 x 18ct eggs at Sams. I usually stock up when Kroger has it on sale for 99c, but missed the last sale. I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the next sale, because dairy prices are outrageous lately.

I have a Pfaltzgraff winterberry cookie tin. I'm sure I bought more items, but can't remember what as I haven't used it in years. I got mine directly from the Pfaltzgraff site.

    1. Ms Goose,
This is the first time I have paid an insane price for eggs, and you know what? I am not fighting crowds. Next time, I will research the prices. I don't go to Sams, but we might go there this next week. I am quite sure your pieces are better than mine! I would like a few more pieces.

  2. Eggs vary wildly here. Best price I can regularly get them $1.49/doz. We go through a LOT of eggs.

Weekend plans are to finish wrapping Xmas presents and figure out stocking stuffers. And probably scrub bathrooms and floors. Oh yeah, Big Fun here, lemme tell ya.

SPEAKING OF COCA COLA: Linda, I tried your Coke/chocolate ice cream float! And you know, it was pretty good! You really have to make sure the ice cream is mixed into the coke, though. There's a big difference in taste when it's just chunks of ice cream floating around in the coke, as opposed to being mixed in and kind of like a smooth shake consistency.

I only had a small cup; any more and I would have gone into a diabetic coma and been writing you from the Great Beyond. But--it was good! I enjoy trying new things, so thanks for the suggestion.

I don't like Santa figures enough to own one. I like them about as much as clowns, which is to say not at all. Santa has a lot of explaining to do as far as I'm concerned. How come he brought all the other neighborhood girls nicer and more gifts than mine???? Huh, Santa??? What was up with THAT?!?

    1. Sue,
I need to find a better price! I probably use more than most people.

I like the Coke and chocolate ice cream, separate at first but with the foam on the fizz all over the cream. Then, as the whole thing becomes one, I love that, too. But, I am glad you liked the flavors together.

Well, don't go into a diabetic coma!

I doubt you will ever get an explanation. It was a mystery how some were favored.

  3. Once a week on the weekend I can buy one dozen eggs at the pharmacy for $2.69. Otherwise they are $2.99. This is the lowest price available. If tgey are all gone, which they often are, there is another brand for $3.99 a dozen. After that they go up in price considerably. And, "no", I've never owned a blow up Santa or any other blown up decoration. I also don't want any.

    1. Joyful,
Your egg prices are worse than the ones I bought. I did not say a blowup Santa. It is a blow mold, the hard plastic Santas from decades ago. I don't think I ever want a blowup Santa or any other blowup decoration. Ugh!

    2. Okay, I guess misunderstood you. Nevertheless I don't like large plastics like hard figures that go on lawns or roofs or blow up stuff. I think most of it looks very tacky though there are some I like seeing from far. I am also concerned about overuse of plastics in general and try to limit my use of it. I'm not as good at it as I should or could be but I do my best.

  4. No blow ups and no large coca cola Santa but I've got a story sometime about all our Coke stuff. Too much and sitting in boxes in the garage

    1. Not blowups! Blow molds! they are the plastic Santas of yester years. Some day, I would like to hear that story of the Coke stuff sitting in the garage.

  5. I have a cute blow mold snowman in the basement, but it may get taken if I put it outside. If I had room, I would put it in the living room, where I can enjoy seeing it again. Our kids used to love that little snowman.

I still haven't gotten my big fake pine wreath hung on the front storm door and then tied to the door with fishing line. It has a clip that holds in on the door, but when the wind blows, it turns the wreath around backwards, if there are storm winds it blows it off the door with just the clip, so my husband and I invisibly tie it onto the door with fishing line going all of the way around the storm door from outside, to inside, and back out the side crack at the door frame. We have the knot in the line at the inside of the door so the fishing line doesn't even show. The winds we have been having around here lately may strip the ornaments off of the wreath. Almost every day it is real windy.

Years ago I made the most beautiful Martha Stewart wreath using a styrofoam wreath form and about a million regular cranberries stuck on toothpicks into the styrofoam form. It looked so pretty on with white storm door and our blue gray shutters.. Then one day I noticed my cranberries were disappearing from the wreath, a lot of them. It looked like it had the mange. I replaced many of the berries, and wondered where the others had gone to. Then one day the mystery was solved when we came home in the car and I was admiring the wreath and decorations, and there was a big fat mockingbird on my wreath getting another berry. A lot of trouble and expense to go to the birds, or bird. Seriously, he was a very fat mockingbird.

Tommy's sandwich creation sounded good to me. I like one brand of soft flour tortillas (I can't think which brand name right now) to make rollups with different lunch meats, or sometimes cold foil pack salmon with a little pickle relish. I also like to make turkey sandwiches with white bread, turkey, a little cold stuffing, and a bit of whole cranberry sauce instead of catsup or mustard. It's a holiday in a sandwich.

    1. susie,
I forgot to say that tying the wreath to the door is a great idea. But, if the winds are so high, I might not put it out this year.

  6. susie,
My children loved the blow mold Santa and Snowman that we had. Well, we had several since I bought one for each of them. I was afraid someone would steal the 3' Santa from the porch, too.

Ack! an expensive bird feeder. That would be discouraging.

He is always finding things I put in the refrigerator and making something he has never had before and showing me. I like whole grain bread, turkey breast, spinach, Miracle Whip. I eat this for breakfast the morning after. I also enjoy dressing with fresh sauce from berries and gravy on top. YUM!

  7. We had a blow mold Santa head that was hung on the wall and lit up. It was my father's as a child so was from the 40's or 50's and was one of my favorite decorations. Sadly one year we pulled it out & it was cracked & broken :( I forgot all about it until you mentioned them!

I usually buy our eggs at Costco. We use a LOT of eggs so I always buy the huge flat of them that has 7 dozen eggs in it. Last time I paid $9.49 so that's about $1.35 a dozen, not bad but I remember when they were a lot less than that!

    1. Bri,
I would have glued that Santa head back together! So sad!
There is no room in the refrigerator, but I would buy more than 18 eggs if there were more room. Prices for eggs make me wish I had my hens again. Their food was free! And, they kept my yard free of pests.

    2. We did try to glue it back together but it looked awful - was literally a crack head Santa haha!
If I could have hens here, I just might! Free eggs and a pest free yard sounds delightful. Shoot, if I could have hens, I'd just as soon have a Goat too. I adore goats & then I could make my own goat cheese ;)
