I Fell

But, it was not that simple. One moment I was sound asleep and then decided to turn over. The next moment I was falling, falling, and falling with a splat. Thankfully, it was carpet over a wood floor. My right elbow and right knee still hurts.

I screamed as I fell or yelped, not sure. But, Tommy heard me and I could hear him thumping down the hallway. He said he could hear me moaning. I don't remember moaning, but my scream did wake me up.

When I fell, i took the top sheet and comforter off the bed. So, I was all wrapped up and had the plastic tube in my nose and was wrapped in that. Well, at least my neck and arm had it entangled.

It took me a second or two to get my wits about me and get untangled. I could not get up, no matter what I tried. Remember, I have back problems and torn rotator cuffs and injured hands and wrists. Finally, I had Tommy get me my little wooden stool from under the kitchen table. He put it beside me and I finally got my bottom on it. Then, I pulled on the closet doorknob with left hand while he let me pull on his hand with my right hand. I was up.

Now, why did I fall? The mattress was partially hanging off the bed (about a foot), and I rolled and could not quit falling after I got my body started off the bed.  That was Friday night. On Saturday night, I was frightened to even move.

Tommy was very worried as he stood there trying to figure out what for me or him to do.

Sunday, I went to the doctor. I have a uti. Between the uti and another statin, I have been feeling horrible. I got an injection and my prescription is at the drugstore which closed for Sunday just before we arrived.

I have hamburger and bscb thawed. However, I told Tommy I was not cooking. We had watched a Goldie Hawn movie, and it was 9 pm. I dug around and found a frozen chicken thigh from KFC, opened a can of green beans, and sliced a tomato.

Have you ever rolled off the bed?

  1. I fell backwards in out bathroom and fell HARD RIGHT INTO THE SHOWER STALL. I really messed myself up. This happened June 4th and I am just beginning to be able to move about. I am unaccustomed to pain. I have lost 12 pounds. Pain robs me of the desire to eat.

I haven’t fallen out of bed but once when I was married to Charly we woke up one morning on the wrong sides of the bed! There had not been a romantic get together and neither of us remembered getting up for any reason. Honestly it was rather frightening! We spoke of it as the night of the alien abduction.

    1. Janet,
That sounds like an awful fall. Mine was not quite that bad. Did you go to a doctor? If I lost the desire to eat, I would know I needed to see a doctor. Twelve pounds is a lot to lose. I sure hope you completely recover soon.

That does sound like alien abduction if you do not remember how you changed sides.

    2. My husband used to take up most of the bed, leaving me with just a few inches on my side. Sometimes if I got up to go to the bathroom I would see that he had commandeered the whole bed again so get in his side - which I hated! Other than that, alien abduction sounds about right!

    3. I'm so sorry to hear about your fall. That sounds nasty. I've never fallen out of bed but I came close reaching for something on the night stand one time. But if you say your mattress was already hanging off the side I'm not surprised really. What a nightmare for you!

    4. Treaders,
It was nasty! Oh, reaching for something on the nightstand is always scary. I figured I would fall doing that. I am very careful now and feel to see if the mattress is aligned correctly. I will have to claim alien abduction from now on.

  2. Not fallen but I have had that sensation before! Sorry you fell. I seem to be in the same ole' rut here- working is good but I'm actually getting tired of not being able to see my clients. I'm thinking I need to do something new- I'm still reluctant to leave the house even for groceries and my belly does not need any baked goods drat it. As soon as it's light here, I'm going for a walk- maybe the fresh air will help with the doldrums. Take care of yourself, Linda.

    1. Nan,
We mostly only leave for food. I shop quickly in mask and gloves. We do take drives to nowhere. Be careful on your walk. It seems a runner can leave a slipstream of 30 ft. Fresh air always helps me. I am trying hard to take care of myself, but falling off the bed was not in the plans...lol. Be careful.

  3. We joke around here that the only time my husband was out of bed before 8:30 was the time he fell out of bed!
Seriously, I'm thankful that you had Tommy to help you get up and that nothing was broken. Take it easy today.

    1. Jan,
Now, that is funny. Yes, I was glad to have him to help me. I wondered if I had broken anything when I first fell because it hurt so. Thanks.

  4. Oh no! This is so scary! I have come close to rolling off the bed but thankfully I have yet to hit the floor.

Sometimes the sensation of falling off the bed is enough to make me scream.

I hope the meds help you to feel better soon.

    1. Lisa,
I have almost fallen off reaching for something on the nightstand or when the mattress is scooting off. And, yes, I did scream those times, too. But, this was a longer and louder scream.

  5. For years I used to get UTI's nearly back to back and someone told me to take 500 to 1000 vitamin C right before bed. Makes the urine acidic or something. That was almost 2 1/2 years ago and I haven't had a UTI since. I told 2 friends with frequent UTI's and they had the same response to the Vit C and UTI's stopped or nearly stopped for them too

    1. Ann,
Thanks. I am going to take some Vit C.

    2. Right before bed is the time because it keeps urine acidic overnight. Sure hope it helps you

  6. When I was in college I fell out of my top bunk and landed on my knees. My roommates said I got up, went down the hallway to the bathroom, came back and went back to bed without acknowledging them or saying a word. I don't remember doing it for it i6 believe them as I had 2 huge bruises on my knees and they hurt for 2 weeks after. So sorry you fell out of bed and are feeling bad again. :(

    1. Rachel,
That was some fall. It is a wonder you did not hurt yourself worse than bruises and pain. Thanks. I have a med to make me feel better.

  7. I fell out of the bed a few weeks ago. I had gotten up early to use the restroom and gotten back into bed. TheHub had gone into work butt early so I just got into his side of the bed and fell asleep, but when I turned like I usually do when I sleep I turned into air rather than the bed. I did not get hurt, but it sure injured my pride.

    1. Anne,
I can see how you did fall. I felt foolish. But, it hurt so much, elbow and knee, that I did not have time to feel injured pride. I feel that now...lol. It felt like I had mattress all the way down, never air, just a floating mattress, floating downward.

  8. Ouch, that's not a good way to get woken up. Hope you aren't too sore. Usually the soreness shows up a day or two later.

  9. I fall a lot, up stairs (yes UP) in the tub , out of chairs. Out of bed on to Rascal or Wilbur. I started putting pillows off the bed on the floor beside the bed to "cushion" me when I do fall out. I notice Rascal and Wilbur moved closer to the bottom of the bed. Both are taught to help me up when I fall. I trained them myself. Charlotte is too light weight to help but she is always there for encouragement... or to get rub . If you hurt in a couple days go get checked out. Better safe than sorry

    1. My daughter and I were experts about falling UP the stairs. I have not fallen in the tub yet. I need to put another mattress beside the bed if this mattress is going to buck me off again...lol. It is good you have the dogs trained to help. I am quite sure my elbow will be better soon. Thanks.

  10. I did go to the emergency room about 3 days after my bad fall. They took x-rays of my hips & lower back and did not find a fracture. They called it a deep contusion. I did not have any external bruising.

I have osteoporosis and fear a broken hip. I broke a rib opening a door & my last fall my pulmonologist found a crushed disk during a chest CT scan.

    1. Janet,
My goodness! I am glad you went to the ER. I had a deep contusion once when I slipped on icy steps and fell to the bottom of the steps and onto concrete. I could have sworn I had broken my hip.

You really must need to be careful if you can break bones that easily. Sorry about that. Thanks for the story of your fall. Take care.
