Our colorful Clothes Are Killing the Environment

Click Here to see how the color in our clothing is polluting Third World countries. I have no time to write, no energy, nothing to say.

Okay, one more thing I have been meaning to say. So...

The dental insurance that I spent $499 on and never used has come in handy. I have to have a crown which will cost $745. The insurance will pay $501, leaving $245 I will owe. However, I have a $10 credit at the dentist, leaving me owing $235. I will get money back from the oral surgeon where I/Tommy paid the full price and insurance will pick up part of that. Hopefully, the amount I owe will be lowered more by using the overage at the oral surgeon. So, once again I am happy with dental insurance.

Okay, my second wind kicked in.

I bought two light fixtures, one for kitchen and one for dining room. I started off by saying we needed lights every day for weeks. He also has to search with a flashlight for items I need. Then, I told him I found a nice one in Lowe's,,,several times. Then, I brought them out of the store and put them in the Rogue. THEN, I brought one in the house and left the other for him to bring in. THEN, I showed him the chandelier. So, all is well except for someone to install them.

Neither of us can carry the ladder from outside. Neither of us has ever installed a ceiling fixture. I did install a light by the door. I had just had knee surgery, stood on a chair, and installed the fixture to a live wire. I wondered why my fingers were tingling. In my defense, the switch was at the off position, but I had the wrong switch because the electrician hooked up wrong light switch to wrong wire.

Okay. Have you ever installed an overhead light?

  1. I would have to hire someone to install something like that. But it sounds like even the electrician didn't do it right.

    1. Ann,
He let his teen son do that outlet. And, it was several years before I had the money to buy the outdoor light. And, I had it installed before I realized I was working with a live wire. I would have kept my fingers off the wire if I had realized that it was live.

  2. I have been wanting to install a new over head light in the dining room for years. The ceiling light in there is painted to look like stained glass and it is close to the ceiling I want some sort of not fancy chandelier, that hangs down fairly close to the table so climbing on a very low ladder or step stool would make it possible to change bulbs out. The bulb just burned out in our dining room ceiling fixture so now my husband will have to get the ladder out to change the bulb and the other burn outs, too. We need long lasting bulbs for that.

Our kitchen ceiling fixture needs to be replaced, too. And I want something with plenty of wattage. It is dark in our kitchen since one of the flourescent lights of two burned out in the fixture and for some reason we can't get a bulb to work in that side of the fixture. This has been going on years because my husband doesn't go in the kitchen for cooking, washing dishes, etc. so he doesn't see what the big deal is. It doesn't seem that dark in there if you are just getting something out of the fridge or walking through to get to another room. The thing with having any plumbing or electrical done in our older house is that it turns out to never be a simple job. A couple of years ago when we wanted to have a new taller toilet put in, it ended up costing thousands and thousands of dollars, but it is a good thing that the plumber had come at that time. There was a pipe leaking behind the bathroom tile wall which was damaging the wall at the floor line. The house also needed a new plumbing stack. It really did, as they showed my husband. The toilet and installation would have been between $300 to $400, but by the time all of the other problems came to light, ugh. That happens in older houses and people.

    1. susie,
A lower light would help a lot. In my old house, the ceilings were ten feet, so nothing was easy. I do understand!

The one side of the light fixture at your house is burned out. The other side could go and you will be in the dark....ask me how I know. It cost $500 for the tall commode and installation. But, unclogging the sewer pipe made it $900, I think. In my 117-year-old house, nothing was easy! Nothing was simple! I have found older people have same complications with wiring and plumbing.

    1. Cindy,
I do understand! I am going to try to change a ceiling bulb in a minute. So, you may have last contact with me!

  4. I really want a new ceiling fan and light fixture combination in one of our bedrooms. It's off balance and clink, clink, clinks every time it's on. I sleep in that room with a grand or two when they stay over, and it annoys me to no end. It's also the hottest room of the house, so a ceiling fan is a must.

We recently had a drain problem in the kitchen. Had one a few years ago and had a plumber come out. Not sure how much it was, but it did seem to fix the problem. For a while. It progressively got worse and worse. Hubby didn't want to call the plumber this time, so he got under the house in the crawl space - had to crawl underneath near the whole length of the house - and took out a section of pipe. Cleared that out, put it back together. Not better. Ended up taking out maybe four or five huge sections of pipe. Guess it had two decades of build up in them. Previous plumber had done "just enough" to get it to work, but didn't fix the problem. It's such a joy now being able to wash dishes and let the water out of the sink and it just flow out! It's the little things in life that please me.

Our neighbor is an electrician, so that kind of work is essentially free to us. Hope you get some light soon!

    1. Alice,
Your fan is offbalance. There is a way to balance it. Look it up in a video. A new fan is not the answer. Or, maybe you want to replace it...lol. I hate jobs done that are "just enough." Not being able to wash dishes properly is a pain.

  5. One of the first things we did when we bought our house was update all of the light fixtures. We bought them a Lowes and paid to have them install. I can't remember how much it was but not a lot. Especially if you have more than one that you want done.

    1. Lori,
All these need replacing whether they work or not. But, these two do not work at all. And, I have allowed him to do the searching for food with a flashlight!

  6. Tommy is lucky to have you as clearly his house has been falling apart around him. I know all these repairs/changes are expensive, but you have already done a number of things on his home to make it more livable. Just keep working on him. If he refuses to pay, perhaps you can save up and do a tiny bit at a time. We women like our homes clean and functional.

    1. Anne,
He gave me a Lowe's and Visa so that I won't have to keep asking him for his when I go to buy something that he knows I am buying. However, if I buy something else, he never complains and just reads the statement, and asks me about the charges. AND, I only buy for him or the house without asking. And, it is never major.

  7. When we bought this house, we had to purchase all the light fixtures and hardware, plus vanity mirror. Now I want to change all out. Well it has been 30 years.

  8. I wanted to change the lights in my kitchen so put them up as best I could then told my son to "stand back" while I flipped the switch. Got it right thank goodness!
