Right-handed or Left-handed?

At the 4th party, I saw a friend I had not seen in maybe 20 years. I was complaining that I could not find my curling iron after blowing my hair furiously and making a mess of it. She commented that she gave up on curling her hair because all curling irons were for right-handed people, that no one made left-handed curling irons.

???

Well, I told her that curling irons were neither right- nor left-handed. She assured me curling irons were all right-handed. We went on that way for a few minutes, and I gave up.

Opinions. please! Are you right-handed or left-handed? And, do you believe there is any such thing as a right-handed curling iron? Or, a left-handed curling iron?

I have sat looking at mine and can not find any evidence mine is for one or the other. I can use it as easily with my left as right hand. I have always curled both sides of my hair...lol.

What do you think?

  1. depends on the curling iron. Most now days are both but I had one in the 70s that was right hand only. My step mom who was a beautician took it to work with her as she was right handed and got me one that was both.

    1. Chef,
Okay. But, I cannot imagine how a curling iron cannot be both. I will have to think about this more...lol.

  2. What a funny story! lol. I never heard of such a reason for now longer using curling irons. Last time I looked they had a straight wand and can be used by left handed and right handed people. I am right handed but no longer use a blow dryer or a curling iron. I just let it all dry naturally and since it's long it doesn't have any real curl or waves. I do love it when I am able to see a hairdresser and they blow it out real straight though. I just don't do it that often.

    1. Joyful,
I ironed my hair in the 60s to straighten it even though it was straight. Now, straight is not the look I want or need! I seldom use a blow dryer or curling iron these days, and it shows. Since I use color religiously, I figure the less damage I can inflict, the better my hair will be for it. I don't want it breaking off in clumps.

  3. As Chef Owings said, it depends on the curling iron, specifically the design and placement of the handle. If you can use yours with either hand, then it is designed for both. As she said, when curling irons were first designed, they were for right-handed people, as has been the case with most things. Companies have gotten wiser over the years and started designing items in such ways as to make them easier for left-handed people to use.

    1. Frances,
Obviously, I have never seen the right-handed kind of curling iron! Now, I want to see what it looks like. This friend is about 60 and smart. I wonder why she has not found the kind I have since she said she had tried all kinds and finally gave up. Thanks.

  4. It might matter how the retractable clip is placed, and definitely there is a difference in how the cord comes in-as curling ions tend to twist the cord as being used. I think about odd thing slike this at times as well.

    1. SAM,
I think about odd things, too. I was discussing one of those things just a few minutes ago. My cord swivels and all I have had for years swivel. She may have never tried a modern one. Beats me.

Thank you. I certainly will. Now, I am going to look at it to see what is different about it.

  7. I am a lefty.
One learns to do things right-handed or not at all. Left-handed devices are usually not available and when they are they are not well made.
