Filters and Frozen Turkey

We went right past KFC today, but Tommy left the receipt at home. No biscuit today!

For the last two weeks, there has been a sound of something like "sheet metal" being bent/popped. You know the sound. Well, Tommy denied it was happening. I pointed out it was from the furnace area. He said I was wrong. Then, he heard it and said it might stop. So, the guy came and confirmed it was the sheet metal in furnace. The filthy filter is the problem according to the serviceman.

The filter was over 1/2 inch thick with dust. Tommy said it is okay, according to some furnace official he heard on tv, to change the filter only once a year. Today, this guy said buy the cheapest filter and change it monthly. Tommy objected, saying the filters are sometimes advertised as okay for 3-6 months. The guy held up both hands and said, "It is your house, do what you want." Tommy brought up the filters advertised for 6 months. The guy said "they want you to buy their filter."

The filter sucked way down when the guy put it back in and the furnace was on. It is SO clogged. We spent the afternoon searching for the size his takes. Two grocery stores and home improvement stores had none. We came home and I ordered 6 for something like $61. Now, to twist his arm each month to change these.

Tommy ended up buying a plan to go over the whole system and change some sort of filter outside. Tommy's heat is a gas furnace under the house and a system outside for ac. I do not understand.

The guy said that not changing the filter often enough will shorten the life of the furnace. Tommy disagrees. He fixes nothing!  Things have to be replaced here.

How often do you change furnace filters? Or, any filters?

I went in to put the blankety blank turkey in the oven. It weighed about 9 lbs. and after a week, it still was frozen solid except in one place where Tommy poked it. The bottom is solid and the behind part is solid. I put it in at 7:30 pm. A thawed turkey should take up to 2 hours. I suppose I will leave this one in for at least 3 hours, maybe more. Maybe we will have turkey some day. We have had dinner tonight.

  1. I have aged out of being the turkey fixer, but I used to notice that the defrosting time suggested on the package was never enough to thoroughly defrost it. I don't think I ever had one that was was defrosted well. It was usually hard to get the insides out as they were still frozen. Just assume that it will take longer to roast than it says. You probably know this as you often mention having turkey.

    1. Carole,
I think I have aged out too, but I am the only one here who knows how to roast a turkey! It seems that I have not gotten the giblets thawed and removed in years. I am so pleased I was not depending on this bird being thawed and not upset at all. Well, except for the fact it won't thaw!!!

  2. We buy the next to the cheapest filters. We leave our furnace fan run 24/7 all year round for air circulation. We change or filters minimum monthly, though every 2 weeks during summer and winter. Our house is old and very dusty, so the dust builds up on the filters quickly. The dirtier the filter, the harder your systems have to work to put out heat or air conditioning. Which also makes the cost of running the system much more than it would if the filters were changed regularly. The filters we buy are 4.00 each and our system takes 2 filters. We feel 8-16.00 per month is cheaper than the rising cost of gas and electric.

    1. Dawn,
Thanks. I am going to read this to Tommy. He is all about saving money, so maybe this will convince him. No, he is still arguing!

  4. My husband buys the cheaper furnace filters and replaces them monthly. We have had our furnace serviced in two different homes and both of the guys that did the check up highly recommended the cheaper filters and monthly changes. We had been spending too much money on special filters because we had pets and the guys said that they don't "draw" as well and make the furnace work harder than needed and the cheaper filters will do a much better job, whether we had pets or not. When we sold our townhouse, it had the original furnace, over 20 years old and the inspector was impressed with how good it looked, despite it's age. My husband would vacuum it out every few months also, which helped keep it in good condition. Ranee (MN)

    1. Rae,
All of this is good information. Maybe I can convince him to change the filters monthly. Exactly where does he vacuum? The filter is in the hall floor.

  5. We change at least every two months. Tommy is quite stubborn isn't he?

  6. I change my filters at least every 2 months sometimes more. I can tell when my allergies start acting up. I used to work for a HVAC place and YES it can damage the equipment if they are constantly clogged. That was one of our biggest problems people called about.
I can't believe that turkey hadn't thawed yet - crazy. I have baked partially frozen many times. Good luck.

So, I will read this to him. Stupid Turkey! I cooked it over 3 hours. It is very tender. I hate juicy meat, so the breast is just right.

  7. My husband puts a new filter in the furnace every 2 - 3 months and it should be more often. We just seem to forget to do it. We have had arguments about the furnace filter needing to be changed. I can no longer get down the basement steps safely, so he is the one who has to do it. Every once in a while I have been the one to notice it because in certain places in the house the air blows directly on me and I can tell if there is the right amount of air coming out. It took many times for him to believe that I can feel the difference, but after several times of checking the filter after having the argument that I am not feeling enough air coming out of it, he has always found the filter to be very covered in dust. Finally he believes me when I notice it. I don't understand why he can't tell the amount of air blowing out like I can.

I don't know what my husband's issue is about changing it much more often is. We get our filters at the old neighborhood hardware store, so it isn't like we are having to hike around in one of the big box hardware stores to get a filter.

    1. usie,
He wants to change the filter every year or six months. I can feel too much air going to the return. It is like a cold breeze up to my knees. The guy said that was from not being changed enough. But, he did not explain why. This filter is at least a half-inch covered with dust.

Too much air, cold air, blowing in the winter and summer is a bone of contention here and causes arguments!

Tommy is afraid he will spend a nickel too much on filters. Well, we have six coming and he still won't relent on how often it is changed.

  8. We have window units, so we vacuum them out monthly. They cool so much better when it’s cleaned.

    1. Belinda,
I had window units that did cool better when I washed the filters or vacuumed them. Usually, I did both. I could breathe better, too.

  9. Tommy sounds like a "don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is madu" sort of person. A stubborn man, in other words (it takes one to know one).

I change my HVAC filers every 3 months. More often than that seems like a waste of money based on what they look like when I remove them. My systems is to do it on the first day of every season (also known as the equinoxes and the solstices) to keep from having to remember when I changed them last or when it is time to change them again. First day of spring, first day of summer, first day of fall, and first day of winter. It works for me.

I buy mine at Ace Hardward where they cost a lot less than at Kroger. A few years back they were $10 each but now with general inflation and all they are around $14 but sometimes Ace has bogo (not often) and also sends $5 coupons in the mail if you are a regular customer. I am always extremely pleased when I could get 2 filters for the price of one at Ace because it is not the sort of item one sees on sale usually.

    1. rhymes,
I should have kept up when he changed one last since he says it was just a few months instead of a year.

I will be looking for sales and coupons from places where we can get a filter. Good system you have.
