Laptop Charger, Gifts, Toaster

Sunday, I got a new cord for recharging/using my laptop. It was an ordeal and cost $93. I managed to wrap one present, the only one I have to wrap.

Russell's and Whitman's chocolates are $9.99 each for a small box. I only buy them when they are bogo, which they were this week, so $5/box. I had coupons for $1 off one box. That made each of them $4. That is a good price for a gift. Then, I wrapped one for a friend and put a hummingbird on top. I used the $0.50 blue foil wrapping paper and the bird was the same deep blue. So, I combined several bargains for one beautiful gift.

I bought six of the boxes of chocolates, and we ate the Whitman's sugar free box. I now have 4 more gifts left. I may or may not put an ornament on top. It depends.

Did I say?--I put my red hummingbird on top of the tree in place of a star or angel. Tommy really liked it and suggested how to make it look prettier.

After an exhausting day looking for and driving to look for the charger/power card, I came home, cooked spaghetti, opened a jar of sauce and took meatballs from the freezer. It was delicious. I forgot to steam the broccoli!

I bought a toaster, cheap one, nothing fancy. When I came here, I think I had a piece of toast. Then, I realized the extent of the roaches. About a year later, after telling him roaches were probably dead in the crumb tray, I picked up the toaster by the top with two fingers and asked him what he wanted me to do with it. He said, "Drop it in the trash." I did.

We now also have a plastic box that seals. After toast, the toaster goes into the box and is sealed with locking handles. The top has gaskets, seals, and locks. I rarely eat toast, but occasionally I do want a piece! I had once piece today for a scrambled egg sandwich.

Sunday was bright, clear, and only a small breeze and in the 50sF. It was a good day, a very good day.

Monday, Tommy cancelled an appoint for me since I had a fever the night before. My head and ears are suffering since I ran out of one of my meds. Sometimes, missing one day makes me ill.

We went to get water at The Pig, and I got other things. I also needed batteries so bought them at Publix since I needed bananas, too. As is my wont, I asked Tommy what we needed or wanted. "Maybe ice cream." I laughed loudly. And, ice cream came home with us.

I love Cella chocolate covered cherries. Even better is dark chocolate covered cherries. I found those and will wrap them in anything, maybe newspaper, and put them in a bedroom, not mine, where they are almost inaccessible to me. The wrapping cannot be pretty enough to put in here or I will decide to eat the candy.

Okay, time to cook dinner--chicken breast for me and thigh for Tommy, steamed broccoli, purple hull peas.

Do you eat the goodies too soon? Do you have to hide them from anyone?

  2. I used to make my own chocolate covered cherries and would make some with milk chocolate and some with dark chocolate, which I prefer, because of how it compliments the sweetness of the filling. I don't make them anymore because I have arthritis in my thumbs and it is hard to wrap the filling around the cherries before dipping into the chocolate. Just too much hand and thumb use and each batch makes 100 cherries, so it was a bit of work. The Cella ones are a good substitute and when we buy them, we each take 2 for our dessert. We try to ration them out that way. I'm glad Sunday was such a good day for you and the blue hummingbird package sounds beautiful. Ranee (MN)

    1. Rae,
I need that recipe. I could make them...lol...and eat them. I go back for dessert seconds and thirds...okay, I have been known to eat more. Now, I should not. I am going to try and take a picture and get it posted.

  3. My sister always buys me a bag of Giradelli Carmel squares and a bag of assorted Lindt truffles for my November 25th birthday. I make them last, even sharing with DH or my daughter if home, until Christmas. It's shear will power! You got a very good deal on chocolates for gifts. I prefer Russell Stover to Whitman's but Whitman's has a prettier box- looks fancier.

    1. SAM,
I LOVE Lindt truffles and Ghirardelli squares with raspberry inside. You do have sheer will power! I like Russell Stover's better than Whitman's, too. Chocolate is always a good gift.

  4. My husband always got a box of assorted chocolates from his patent attorney. I really don't care for chocolates, so it was passed on to friends and family and got me brownie points. The attorney retired and instead of choclates, he made a donation to some charity and took his clients out to lunch. No chocolate here!

    1. Jan,
There is no downside to getting chocolates for Christmas. Eat it or get brownie points. Lunch is good, too. But, chocolate is better! Thanks for that.

  5. My preferred brand is Brach's choclate coveried cherries. My sweetheart at fifteen bought me a box for my birthday. It was pure love from that day after. Engaged at 18 an married at 20 together for 31 1/2 years until his death. I still grief and miss him everyday. I used to buy that candy and would have to hide it in my closet. Our son would take a fork and dig out the cherry and leave the rest. I learned to eat them together he would get the cherry and I would eat the rest. I still buy them but would sit and eat the whole box. As luck would have it I have not seen then this year but I will get them when I do. My husband would always bring a pizza and chocolate covered cherries when we went to the drive in movies on a date. So sad that our young people do not know the simple things when it comes to dating. I do not think they take the time to talk about what really matters, what sacrifice is required to build a live together. Hard work to buy a home and have children. To plan for the future and old age. We agreed on all those things and even though he has passed, we put a child thru college, paid of our home and secured a comfortble old age. I am grateful we saw the struggles of out parents so that we could make good decisions.

    1. Brach's is delicious. But, I have not seen a box in years. I just don't like the white stuff inside the chocolate covered cherries. That is funny about your son. But, not if it had been my son and my chocolate. The cherry is the least part for me, so he could have had it.

Sorry about your loss. It sounds like a good marriage you two had. I liked the date food. Smart. No, people don't want to work like we did.

  6. That is true Linda, no one seems to want to do the hard work of life, to make a famiy, raise children to be able to come from hardworking parents that give them the best of everything. I do realize that sometimes that all comes apart do to the actions of one parent but they should only want the best for their children. It serves no one, there can still be a family after heartbreak if everyone can work for it. I wish you the best. I know how much you love your children!

    1. Texas,
It is sad that people do not work together and young people are sometimes lazy and sometimes ignorant. How do you know how much I love my children?

  7. Those are delicious cherries! They are very sweet though, so one or two and I am done for the moment. I’m sorry your toaster had to be tossed. My toaster will only toast one side, so I have to flip the bread around when it’s done to toast the other side. I wouldn’t want to throw it away as technically it does work. LOL

    1. Belinda,
Technically, that ws Tommy's that got tossed. MY toaster is somewhere in the storage unit. He was very protective of that toaster, so refused to believe it needed to be tossed or fumigated and scrubbed.
No, I would not toss your toaster, either, unless it just refused to completely die.
I can sit and eat a whole box of dark Cella. But, I don't.

  8. Nice job on the multiple discounts for those gift chocolates! A bargain like that make me feel smart and savvy! And your wrapping sounds lovely.
I am trying to strictly reduce sugar in my diet, so those chocolate covered cherries are a no-no and I can't bring them in the house. No one else likes them, I would be forced to eat the whole box, so it would just end very badly.
One candy I do have to hide are Hershey's Chocolate Drops. I use them to top my peanut butter spritz cookies. My son has the nose of a hound dog and the determination of a hungry raccoon, so it's a merry game to try and outsmart each other!

    1. Sue,
I did feel very happy and smart! It was giftwrap never opened. Since I have never used blue foil, it seems exotic and daring.
I will reduce chocolate after Christmas.
Hershey's Chocolate Drops? Are they the large mounds of white, sugary insides, coated with chocolate? I detest those. They are only good for me to scraped off the chocolate with my teeth. But, enjoy them and try to outfox the son.

    2. Hershey's drops are like giant M&Ms; the coating is somewhat hard but not crunchy. I used to use giant M&Ms until they stopped making them (why?????). Had to hide those from DS, too. My latest hiding place is the cleaning supplies cupboard in the laundry room--the last place he'd ever look! HAH!

    3. Sue,
I thought you meant those horrible drops with white, sweet center. ugh. Santa brought me those and I traded them to siblings. Tommy would never find candy in cleaning supplies, even if he knew where they were. How old is DS?

    4. Naw, I wouldn't eat those candies with the white, sweet center either! Hershey's drops are delicious.
DS is 22 and in his final year of college. He's living at home and commuting to school. I enjoy his company, and I enjoy our little hide and seek games. Keeps my mind sharp, y'know? LOL!

    5. Sue,
I will have to try out the Hershey's now that I know they are not nasty. It makes it rough to hide things from a kid who is tall enough to reach things...lol.

  9. Good Gracious that was a lot to have to pay for the charger! Through the years that I have been using a laptop I have had to replace MANY power cords. I just order one on Amazon. Although once I traveled to my daughter's and forgot to pack the laptop cord. I found one online at a big box store and was able to pick it up in just a couple of hours.

Late this summer my regular laptop screen went out. I hoped that it would be a simple fix and not require an expensive screen replacement. I had to decide how much money I wanted to put into a 6 year old machine. I decided to just go for it. In a couple of days I received good news. When they opened it they found that a cord had come undone! It was a simple repair but did cost just over $100 in labor charge.

    1. The last charger cost less than half this much. Somehow, the specs have changed. Since I did not have access to the internet, I bought an hp charger rather than a cheaper Targus, like the one I had. I am still looking for a cheaper charger.

That would be so annoying to have the screen go out. Labor costs are soooo high! At least it was a simple fix.
