Monday This and That

The paperwhites I planted are growing every day. Forsythia are blooming all over. A pink magnolia is in full bloom. Daffodils are blooming. Spring is here and winter just won't let go!  Of course, the dandelions were only absent for about a month this winter. They have been in bloom here for weeks. ugh

Over the last three weeks when we have been in Cullman, Tommy compares gas prices. It seems they do not creep up or slowly go down in price, as is usual. There are jumps of 5 to 10 cents. Then, when we get back here, the same thing happens in one day. I don't think I have ever seen these kinds of changes in gas prices.

My friend, L, down the street, said she heard barking, yelling, and growling as she was going to her car. She looked around and saw a dog and man rolling around in the street, getting all dirty. There was another man running away. She thought the dog was hers since it looked almost identical to hers. She was terrified and ran to see if her dog was in her yard. It was, but she thought the dog fighting a man could break down a little dog gate she has, so she put her dog inside.

Then, she tried to get in her car and the bad dog saw her. The man was yelling, telling her to hurry and get into the car. She was more terrified and could not get in before the dog came near. The man finally got the dog away from her and took it away. She said the man had a heavy chain wrapped around his arm several times.

She is of the opinion that the man beats the dog and that he raises bait dogs. The other man who ran away in fear, finally came back out in the street after the dog was on a chain. I feel very unsafe now. She also feels unsafe. A neighbor of hers who lives behind the guy said that several mean dogs are in the back yard. Every few days, guys in several cars come and take dogs away. Maybe we should carry bear spray to get into the car?

THEN, when I told Tommy, he said a teen neighbor boy came by the house with his dog on a very large chain! I don't know what to think.

It's raining and the radar map is covered with rain, over the whole area, Mississippi to Georgia. I suppose we won't be going out today.  When I went to Verizon on Saturday, I had to leave because I became so tired. Sunday, I went back and finished getting the phone set up. Tomorrow, 3G goes away.

There are phone calls to make, so I had better go and get those done. Plus, I have misplaced my Guaifenesin and my chest is getting more congested by the day. Plus, there is laundry to put and even though it is not even noon, I suppose I ought to think about dinner. There are no leftovers! Booo! Tommy threw out the rest of the cabbage after he ate most of it for dinner. I am not sure why he did that. He washed the pot it was in, so maybe he wanted to get the pot clean. But, I did not question him.

Okay, I am thinking about having salmon croquettes for dinner tonight. Those call for mashed potatoes. I won't be peeling, slicing, or dicing. My hand would not survive without severe pain for days.

What are you having for dinner on Monday night? Will it yield leftovers? Leftovers are the highlight of my life. How important are leftovers to you? Do you complain about leftovers, or do you rejoice like I do?

  1. We had pit bulls next door many years ago and they got out and cornered our daughter against the house. I called 911 and police came out to talk to the neighbor and told them to get them out of the neighborhood. They told them that if they attacked anyone they could be sued for everything they had including their house. We never saw them again after that day.

I hate leftovers so I only cook for one meal. Salisbury steak and mashed potatoes are on the menu for tonight. I will likely make some coleslaw to go with. I will cook extra potatoes though for frying tomorrow night with pork chops. I will also fry the rest of the cabbage with that meal.

    1. Lana,
I am terrified of dogs, anyway. This is more than I can handle! I know nothing and this is all from someone else. Maybe I can convince Tommy to call. Your neighbors must have been renters to get rid of them so easily. I know that was scary for you and your daughter.

I love leftovers! it is like a gift.

  2. Goodness, it sounds like they are raising fight dogs. I would call and report them. That is just so disgusting.

I love dandelions - God made them and they are pretty. I am sure many of my neighbors hate me - too bad. I use them as well. Jelly and tea.
I remember gas several years back got to well over $5/gal. We are still $3 and change - so not complaining. Sure, it could be better, but it could be way worse and has been.
I had beef hot dogs here today. No leftovers. I usually freeze mine after 2 days and that way I always have something to heat in a hurry.

    1. Cheryl,
Something needs to happen. I only know what she said.
I don't "love" dandelions, but I am not going to get all upset at a few.
Gas prices are always a mystery. I have never seen it even close to $5/gal.
I put two servings in the freezer immediately, or we will just eat it since we can eat the same thing for days.

  5. Do you have a tulip tree and forsythia in your yard? The only thing blooming in mine are the redbud trees. A few years ago I planted daffodils and they came up for a while but now nothing.
I still have to give the backyard a good winter cleanup and get it ready for us to enjoy being outside.

    1. Anne,
At my house I had forsythia and redbud. Tommy has nothing. NOTHING! He had everything destroyed because he hates the care of anything. When we moved into my house in 1977, there was a swath of daffodils, several swaths, in fact. Over the years they spread. They are still there. They just never diminished. I wonder why.

After the storm and all the winter rain, there are bits of limbs all over this yard.

    2. I have a sneaking suspicion a guy I hired to clean out the upper back yard might have sprayed them (unintentionally) with Round-Up

That is too bad. I would be crushed.

That all sounds so nice ...

Our Spring flowers were starting to bloom and then the storms came!
Some flowers are still ok but others are not. A shame but hopefully as the weeks go by the garden will improve again.

    Take care.

    All the best Jan

I hate it when a storm batters flowers away. The flowers usually recover which I always doubt when it happens.

  8. I like to cook a big pot of something and save out enough for a meal or two for the two of us and then freeze the rest in meal portions. That makes for a few good meals later on and I dont have to cook them, just re-heat and add a salad

That is my preference, too. I like to cook, but not a whole meal every night.

  9. Daffodils are very hardy and will continue to spread if they have the space. They will both go to seed and develop bulblets, so they have an advantage.

Tonight we had baked chicken thighs with baked potatoes and steamed broccoli and carrots. I do try to have leftover proteins for family to have at lunch. Leftover vegetables are reheated or thrown into a salad. I am so tempted to slice the leftover baked potatoes into a quick mustard/egg potato salad, but I don't need or want the carbs!

Leftovers are a gift--you get to cook once but enjoy twice. No one here complains about leftovers, which helps ensure their survival. LOL!!

Maybe your neighbor needs to make a call to the police. I hate people who are cruel to animals, and hope they go straight to hell. Not even kidding about that.

    1. My daffodils at my house were obviously very hardy and they have lived 50 years!
Your dinner sounds delicious. I love potato salad. I might make some for me. Tommy hates cold potatoes. Of course, he will eat it hot if he sees no eggs...lol.
People should learn to eat leftovers for their survival or buy food and cook it themselves!
I don't know what she will do. I will see. I have rescued many dogs and cats from abuse even though I am not a dog or cat person because of fear, fleas, and allergies. I agree they should be punished who hurt animals.

  10. That dog situation on your street sounds dangerous. You might want to get some of that dog repellent spray for you and Tommy. Years ago our neighborhood had a lot of people with pitbulls. Our Collie and Sheltie dogs spent most of their time in in our fenced backyard or house. One of the pitbulls climbed into our fenced backyard and killed our sweet Sheltie, the Collie was huge with a thick ruff of fur at his neck and all over. He was a giant collie from a breeder who bred Collies that came from a line that a breeder in Canada bred. The Collie weighed 110 lbs. The only place the pitbull could get a grip was on our Collie's skull. Many stitches were needed to close the bite wound on his skull. His skull wasn't crushed because of the size and thickness of his bones and head. The vet also had to re attach a part of his ear. As far as that pitbull goes, he got his just reward for killing our Sheltie. The police had to shoot the pitbull dead to stop the fight. The neighbor we suspected owned the pitbull, because we had seen it in his back and front yard, claimed it wasn't his.

One time during those years, when our son was about 8 or 9 he had to climb up on top of a car to escape a dog. I don't know what kind of dog it was. He waited on top of the car until the dog went away then he ran home.I think if that dog would have been a pitbull, it would have got up on top of the car and caught him. That was before all of the kids carried phones with them.

Your yard sounds like it is so pretty with everything blooming. We don't even have any daffodil tips showing yet. This week we will be having several rounds of rain, mixed sleet and snow, snow, for a few days. I lost track of when it will all finally stop when I was watching the weather report. I have tulips, daffodils, grape hyacinths, and crocus that come up in my front yard. I can't wait to see them again.

I made a package of skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs for supper. They were big ones. I made oven barbecued chicken. They were real good. I had store bought potato salad, and cornbread to go with them. Northern style cornbread, from what I understand, it is sweet, that Jiffy corn bread. I thought since the thighs were giant and there was plenty of good potato salad and cornbread, it would go for two meals, but my husband wolfed down two of those big thighs, and plenty of potato salad and cornbread. So,I don't know what supper will
be tomorrow. I still have one of the thighs for my supper. I guess he will have a frozen dinner for his supper tomorrow, and cornbread. I really like having a supper meal that will go for two meals for the both of us. We used to get carry out Steak and Shake burgers and fries, or Jack in the Box, or Chinese once a week for supper. Now the Steak and Shake near us and everywhere else went out of business, Jack in the Box is not only more expensive than it used to be,but short on workers, so they may not be open when we go, and all of the nearby Chinese carryout places that were handy for us to go, went out of business during the pandemic. Ackk! I do get tired of eating my own cooking sometimes, and I get real tired of doing all of the dishes all of the time.

What a bratty, spoiled person I sound like with my Poor Pitiful Pearl crabbing, when we have plenty of food for me to cook at home and others have very little. Sorry about that. Sometimes,I forget how good things really are. "Stinking thinking", I suppose.

Have a nice day enjoying all of the spring flowers.

  11. susie,
I am pretty terrified of dogs, anyway, so this situation really frightens me. There are no flowers in Tommy's yard. The daffodils are at my house/lot. He pulled out all his shrubs with the truck and a chain, cut down three pine trees and had all the monkey grass destroyed. He does have dandelions. All the other flowers I mentioned are in the neighborhood. I have forsythia, redbud, and dogwood at my house/lot.

I always ask Tommy if he can eat just one piece of chicken or whatever, ask him if he thinks there is enough of whatever for two meals. That way, I am not being stingy and give him the choice. If I said nothing and there was not enough left for another meal, I would be okay.

I don't hate to cook. But, I get tired of figuring out what to cook or prepare. I love it when I cook 6 or 8 bscb and can freeze a meal, and still eat two and maybe have meat for lunch. If there is a container of chicken, he will eat chicken sandwiches for lunch. Me too. No, you don't sound spoiled. We all get that way.

  12. Our Monday night meal was a buy one get one free at Ruby Tuesday. I do enjoy leftovers, depending on what the meal was. Somehow, it seems that if I do not love what we're having for supper, we will have way more leftovers to deal with.

I cook a very large package of hamburger meat on Sunday and that will be my lunch each work day. Last year we got into the habit of planning our supper meals a week at a time. We are fairly predictable. Tuesday night is always BOGO at Buffalo Wild Wings (even though it is now buy one get one 50% off instead of free). Sunday is always breakfast food after church.

I wish there were a Ruby Tuesday near us! I guess you just leave more for for leftovers...lol.
That is good to do for all your lunches. I am predictable, too. If I can get the protein done, the rest is easy.

  14. Your flowers sound so pretty!!! I'm jealous you already have so much blooming or peeking out at least. Spring is my favorite!! I cheered up quite a bit the other day when I realized how close we are to Spring :) So I'm curious... what's the purpose of you going to check on your lot so often? Do you still have things left on the property you're checking or what? Are you going to sell your land there or rebuild or what are your plans?

So I am a brat about left overs and am loathe to eat the same thing two nights in a row. Once in a great while I will if it's something I really loved but usually I can't stand the thought of eating the same thing the next night. I really wish I wasn't like this because I absolutely see the value & savings in eating left overs... I'm sure my hubby wishes the same of me LOL We did eat left overs from Christmas last night though! The hubby froze a bunch of the smoked prime rib he made & last night thawed out enough to make us French Dip sandwiches on this really delicious bread we picked up at a bakery over the weekend. It was amazing!! :) So that's how we usually handle our leftovers, we freeze them for another night down the road!

The flowers are all around and on my lot, but there will be flowers on the porch here.

Freezing leftovers for later is perfectly fine as far as saving on food costs and generally not wasting food. But, cooking every night is horrid! You made good use of Christmas leftovers.
