Just One Thing--A Bit of Stocking Up

For the last few days I have been thinking and researching how to get black beans in the can the cheapest way possible. FWIW, I will not buy Great Value even though a can of black beans is $0.72. I found Bush's for $1.25 on Amazon. But, that is just too close in price to what I can find them in the store.

When I went into Publix, I found a sale on Bush's Black Beans Reduced Sodium, just what I need for only $1/can. So, I bought ten cans. I want to make black bean brownies and taco casserole/soup. There are dried black beans here to cook, but that is not happening.

This may be the first time I have bought this brand. I know other brands might be cheaper, so I can wait until I go to different stores. The "reduced sodium" is what sold me on these this time. Of course, cooking from dried would be better.

Today. I went to two stores, thinking I felt much better. Well, obviously I am not a lot better. I bought other things, but this one thing is all I have the energy to talk about. We arrived home about 5 pm, and I went to bed before 5:30 and woke at 8:30. Five hours later, I am still in a stupor and hurting. It's like I cannot wake up.

What have you stocked up on lately?

  1. Bush's beans are a big seller here in Texas. I use their black beans in my taco soup. One of my favorite brands. Their blackeye peas with snaps are great. Just stocked up about 8 cans. Stocked up on breakfast cereals Great sale and coupons used, got 15 boxes added to the pantry. Sorry you are not well yet. Did you pick up your Zpack?

    1. Bush's is a good brand. I never buy any canned bean until I found i like black beans. I was going to order a dozen cans on Amazon. I decided to buy more of another brand later. Tommy has ten boxes of cereal by his chair on a shelf, just like Publix or WM...lol. I am not well yet and might feel a bit better. I did get the Zpack.

  2. Bush's is a great brand! It's the only brand of baked beans I'll buy. That taco soup sounds good. I might have to add it to my menu sometime soon. I hope you feel better soon.

    1. Ma Goose,
I agree about Bush's. I don't buy baked beans but may buy Bush's on your recommendation if I do. The taco soup is delicious!

  3. I'm all for cooking those dried beans. Canned beans are too soft/mushy. I cook up a bunch and freeze them in the portions I generally use.

    1. Elle,
I am laughing because my dried beans I cook end up more mushy than most people like. I have never bought any other canned beans. And, surprisingly, the black beans are never mushy as most are, as you say.

    2. I never soak black beans and I cook only 40 minutes. Perfect every time.

    3. Elle,
Your comment may have pushed me over the edge to cooking the dried black beans. Thanks.

  4. Great buy on the beans! I do like Bush's, but I also like Goya. They have a reduced sodium version of most beans, and they are usually cheaper than Bush's (except during sales). You will probably find them in the "Mexican" section of your grocery store.

The last good buy I had were 1 lb. boxes of frozen, raw chicken patties in different flavors (spinach, veggie, jalapeno, etc). 4 patties to a box. $1.99 each. That was a good deal, so I bought 10.

I would like to know how you make your taco soup with black beans!

Glad you're feeling a bit better. You've been sick so much lately that I'm not surprised you're on a rather slow mend. It's tough to bounce back when you keep getting knocked down!

    1. Sue,
I am familiar with Goya, but the price was not good. I always look over the Hispanic section.

That was a great deal on the chicken patties. I would have gotten multiples, too.

It is so hard since I had just recovered from the uti.

This taco soup is a recipe for taco casserole. I put it in a crock pot and use much less rice.

      Ground pork
      can black beans
can whole kernel corn, drained or not
      can black beans, drained
      two cans tomato sauce
1/3 c uncooked brown rice (more or less to suit you and any kind of rice)
taco seasoning packet and I use just a little bit as the heat is too strong for me and my stomach. Or use your own mixed seasoning for tacos.
I use an 8 oz package of Kraft shredded cheese, Italian blend. You might prefer a different cheese.
More rice needs more liquid, so using liquid from corn works. Remember, I read this as taco casserole. I just ended up with soup. The original recipe calls for ground beef.
      😊

  5. Why won't you buy Great Value? I won't touch Goya products because of their president, Unanue, pushing the Big Lie.
I have only cooked dried beans a handful of time. I typically stick with Bush's, as well as store brand. I refuse to pay over $0.69/can, though. Typically, I buy a case, for about $0.50/can when the supermarket in the "big city" about 25 miles away has their case sale. I've not been making things which require beans (chili, taco soup) for a while, though.

    1. Meg,
My reason may be convoluted to some. Walmart deals with Chinese produce and products. China uses "night soil" collected from elaborate toilets on the roadsides to lure people to use their bathroom. Human waste cannot be used on food plants for a year or two, forgot which. China put adulterated baby formula on the market and killed babies in their own country. Dogs in our country die from dog food from China or with Chinese products. I don't trust the Chinese any more than I trust the Russians. I suppose I should put Goya on the list of products I will not buy. I passed them by as I had a feeling there was some reason I did not want them. I do remember Goya being advertised from the WH, so was skeptical.

I have had a nap after a restless night. Then, I sat in the car for an hour and did nothing. However, I feel so listless and foggy brained. So, hope i made sense and wrote full sentences.

    2. You made perfect sense. I try to avoid food products from China. You can ask your Publix who provides their store-brand products. It may very well be Bush's. After all, it's not like Publix has food processing plants. When I was in h.s., I had a friend who worked at a supermarket. He said that the store brand canned vegetables came in the same delivery with, on the same truck with the name brand on its side.

    3. Meg,
I doubt they will tell me! But, I will ask someone who might tell me. I have people slam me for being "paranoid" and "untrusting." But, I don't care.

  6. I think Goya Black Beans are wonderful but I WILL NOT BUY THEM for the same reason other's have mentioned. For many years they had a recipe on the back of the can for Cuban Black Beans. It was a favorite meal around here. I still make the recipe with other brands but will admit they tasted better when I used Goya.

    1. Janet,
I knew there was a reason I was not buying them, but at that moment just knew not to do so. I have used them but don't remember their taste. The ones I bought are fine with me.
