The Price of Eggs!

When I was shopping, eggs were on my list. I was shocked to find a carton of 18 eggs was $5.99. This was scandalous. There was no way I was spending that much. So, I left without eggs.

However, I decided to wait for an Easter sale on eggs. I decided that if they were on sale Wednesday, that was good. I came home and thought it over and did some math. At $5.99/doz., the cost of an egg was still only 33 cents. Since calming down, I know I can and will pay the price. Hopefully, there will be eggs on sale, if not at Publix, then somewhere I can and will go.

(Once again, Kitty is ripping up her petticoats for bandages, this time for Matt's spinal surgery. There must have been a lot of petticoats sacrificed in the West.)

I am thinking about Easter Dinner. Potato salad is on the menu. I will eat mine cold. Tommy's will be minus eggs and heated. Unless there is ham in the freezer or I just cannot stand not having it, we will have something else for our meal. Maybe we will have green bean casserole, but probably just fresh green beans. I am not sure what else. I really want something Jello since Jello says Easter to me. That sounds like enough--protein, potato salad, green beans, Jello something. If I get the energy, I may add more. This is a tentative and maybe incomplete menu.

Maybe people won't deny children colored eggs for Easter. Mine would have been devastated. One day after Easter before the third child was in school, she was sitting at the table peeling eggs and eating them. She said to me sadly, "Mama, I don't think I can eat anymore of these balls. I looked around to see what "balls" she was eating. She was holding a yolk with a bite out of it. I told her maybe it was time to quit. No one was forcing her! She was having fun peeling Easter eggs.

What is your reaction to high egg prices? Will you cut back on eggs this year? What is the plan for Easter Dinner at your house?

  1. No cut back on eggs here. Considering the care and upkeep of chickens, sorting, shipping and packaging - they aren't expensive. There are a lot of people in the line from baby chick to store that need to earn a living wage. Considering the protein I get - it is cheap.

    1. Cheryl,
Plus, chickens are ill all over. I will not cut back. I like eggs and they are good for me. It is cheap protein.

  2. Aldi has free range eggs for 1.99 a dozen this week and their regular dozens are still less than $2 here. Publix is high on eggs always and I never even look at them in there.

Maybe I can get Tommy to go in and buy eggs at Aldi. When I was at a cheap store last week, eggs were almost as high as at Publix.

    2. If your store does not have a mobility cart ask them to get one so you can shop there. Tell them they are losing money by not being accessible to customers who need one. You may have to tell them a dozen times but they will get one if you keep asking.

    3. Lana,
When an Aldi first opened, I asked. The manager said they would have to see if it would profit them. I did not like that attitude. I am not going to struggle to get in to beg.

    4. We got that response from the store near our lake house but Hubby is persistent and called corporate and it happened. The manager there said his own mother could not shop at his store because they did not have one. My husband pointed out that if only he did the shopping then he only bought what was on the list but that if I was there I bought many other items that I did not think to put on the list or know they had. Apparently that made sense to them. He also pointed out that Lidl has them and was taking away their business. Don't know if you have Lidl. But all that to say they will help you if you keep asking. The manager may not even be there anymore as they move them around quite a bit.

It is wearing on me to have to advocate for everything and get rebuffed. Maybe it will work.

  3. That is a crazy price for eggs. Here they have around $2.49 for a carton of 18. Last week Kroger had their big packs of 60 eggs on sale for 7.00. I picked up a pack. We'll decorate some with the kids and use the rest for breakfasts and for tuna salad.

I wish I were near Kroger. I love that store. You can even eat the ones the kids decorate and hide. So, not a complete waste for fun.

  4. I keep hearing about egg prices skyrocketing. I haven't had to buy any for a couple of months, now that my hens are laying more with the longer days. I just checked prices at my local Walmart. 18 eggs are $2.56 and a dozen is $1.74

Eggs have been pretty expensive here, but not like this. I certainly it is just a special Easter price. I sure wish I still had chickens.

  5. I always think of you when I buy eggs on sale. I can't believe that your eggs costs twice as much as mine does at Sams. I can get 2 x 18ct cartons for the same price you pay for just one carton. It's crazy!

    1. Ms Goose,
Even when I have gone to cheap stores and have been pleased with a low price, my eggs are still more costly than yours. It is crazy, right!

  6. I had a rain check for 18 eggs for $1.99 so when I went to the store to use the rain check I was shocked to see the regular price for 18 eggs is now $5.99! All food prices seem to be going up but it seems like the price of eggs went up exponentially over the past few days!

Yes, it is shocking. I think the last ones I bought were over $4, but this was ridiculous.

  7. I pay about $6 / dozen for barn raised eggs. I don't buy the cheapest because I like to think the chickens are treated well, although some people would say no commercial chicken is treated well. I don't know, I just hope my money helps some chickens.

I had intended a family dinner for Easter but my daughter has covid and the whole household is required to isolate so there goes family dinner.

My other daughter has gone to her boyfriend's place for the isolation period, allowing her to keep working. She says she will come and eat outdoors with us at Easter, which will be nice.

Good for you. I, too, hope chickens are treated well. I wonder what eggs are from a farm.

I imagine covid is still disrupting family plans. That sound great to be eating outdoors at Easter. And, it is good she can continue working. Enjoy Easter!

  8. Eggs are !.99 in the Birmingham Aldi. You can order and pick up at most stores. Aldi Birmingham area Aldi stores have butter for 1.97. My Aldi had a 4 limit.

I just got the ads and we are headed out for butter Tuesday. There was no ad for eggs at Aldi, but we will be getting some tomorrow.

  9. Looking at the cost per egg was smart-considering how much protein and how versatile an egg is, it stills seems good value. Of course we'd all like to pay less so good luck getting a better price without too much searching.

    1. SAM,
I knew someone who bemoaned the price of fruit, but was willing to buy chips and junk food. So, considering protein is valuable to our health, it did seem like not so much to pay. I did find a cheaper price and Anne told me about the Aldi ad at her store, which of course, is near enough to me.

  10. Well we don't buy eggs and the prices do not seem to be going up out west as fast.

  11. Eggs are still inexpensive in my part of New England; I just got a special on 18 eggs for $1.99. Of course I bought my limit, which was 4 cartons. We will go through them in no time. I am sure the prices will rise sooner than later.

I don't know what we're doing for Easter. Nobody here wants a ham dinner. We will probably have waffles, bacon, and scrambled eggs for brunch and then a basic chicken dinner, maybe with scratch biscuits.

My word I am hearing some child yowling its head off. Must be the new neighbors; they have a toddler. Charming.

Nope, I just checked. It's the baby's grandmother screeching "YAAAAAAAAAY!!!" and "WHEEEEEE!!!" at the top of her lungs while pushing the baby in the swing. Sweet Jaysus, Meemaw--shut yer pie hole! The swing ain't that darn exciting.

I detest noisy neighbors. The former neighbors had a barky dog. Guess now I gotta deal with a screaming Meemaw.

I surely don't want to end this on a grumpy note, especially since it's such a beautiful day, so I will share something pleasant. Last night I discovered the delicious combination of maple pecan ice cream and warm caramel sauce. My stars it was amazing! I could have eaten an entire pint!

That is a great price. Our new neighbors with four children move in tomorrow. They look like the noisy type. I can understand the children being noisy, but grandma?

    2. I have no idea why she was bellowing so. I'm pretty sure they heard her the next town over. That poor kid was probably scared senseless. And is now profoundly deaf. SMH.

Good luck with the new neighbors. If nothing else, they'll be fodder for new stories. I hope they bring you and Tommy a plate of brownies or cookies to introduce themselves!

    3. Sue,
Loud adults teach children to be loud! That kid will think this is all good fun, and be stupidly loud, also. I don't mind loud children within bounds. Of course, the woman could also have dementia and not know what she is doing. She may be deaf!...lol.

I will probably take them a huge pan of brownies. I imagine moving with four kids is a full-time job right now. Maybe there will not be too much fodder for stories. lol
