Missed the conversation of the day. I do not blog but it must get tiring some days. Hope you are well and have a great weekend! I clicked on the link but bees are not my thing. I even prefer to pollinate my v veggies with a little paint brush, works great.
Having kept bees, I was stuck on the point that he tells people who are interested in beekeeping to NOT keep bees. It's hard, it's expensive, it's heartbreaking. He's right, they are livestock, and require the responsibility of keeping livestock. With our final swarm, we decided to abandon beekeeping. Instead, we keep our acreage covered with wildflowers, blackberry bushes, etc. Our "pretty" yard areas are planted with things like poppies, red clover, Echinacea, Salvia, Foxglove, etc, things which attract and feed pollinators.
Meg, I thought that was really good advice to plant flowers. I can do that! People get good ideas without counting the cost of doing so. Some people should not be beekeepers or dog owners or parents. But, they like the idea without thinking of the reponsibilities.
I don't know if it would work indoors. You could try some tomatoes in pots on the porch or near by. I had more produce by doing it myself rather than just waiting for the bees to do it. Just a tiny paint brush did the job!
Everything I potted on the porch was eaten by some critter that likes tomatoes, zucchini, and squash but not eggplant. The eggplant was an accident, but thought I could share it. After the basil has done well under the lamp, I decided maybe I could grow other things in here.
When the Flow Hive came out, I thought it was a great idea and I would be tempted to get one. My dad has kept bees for almost 40 years and told me it was a silly idea, that it made it look easy and idiots would never manage their hives. Im more of the opinion that anything to encourage bees is a good thing. Apiarists here are in deep trouble. Varroa mite has been detected and hundreds of hives are being destroyed. It's heartbreaking
kylie, It certainly seemed like a good idea. Maybe it would encourage bee keeping, but people would not follow through. I read that the mite only attacked weak hives. That people tried to make the combs larger or something. lol. I cannot remember. It is a shame that bees worldwide are stressed and dying. We need bees.

ReplyDeleteTexas,
DeleteI have considered trying to grow some things indoors and decided I might be able to pollinate vegetables myself.
